A/N: I might edit how the story is and change it if I feel like it but right now I think it fits perfect with how I feel. Please review.
Jasmine and Cinna had been best friends since the second month of kindergarten.
Jasmine had loved the rainbows on Cinna’s crayons box and Cinna was quick to catch the hint of a future best friend. It wasn’t long before the two were inseparable, during school hours that is.
Brown hair with blonde and brown eyes with blue the girls were adorable together. Cinna was like an angel with her light features and Jasmine was almost like her opposite, but opposites attract and they were double trouble.
Unfortunately Cinna lived a long ways from the school, while Jasmine walked too and from. They could see each other on occasion over the weekends when their parents allowed a slumber party but it was never aloud two weeks in a row. The girls became closer and closer and many secrets were shared between the two.
The room was quiet, as if expecting the whole world to collapse around them. Cinna and Jasmine sat upon Jasmine’s bedroom floor, hiding behind the bed, should anyone open the door. They liked to hide from the world, pretending it was only the two of them.
“What else do you have for a secret?” Cinna listened. Her eyes sparkled with a sort of mischief.
“There are some secrets that I need to keep to myself.” Jasmine nodded matter-of-factly. Cinna pouted.
“Please Jasmine?” She begged. Sighing Jasmine thought about it. She had debated about sharing this secret before but she didn’t know if it would work. See this secret is of the heart, and she wasn’t sure if she was ready to share something so personal. “Please?” Cinna cried once more.
“Close your eyes.” Jasmine ordered giving in. Cinna obeyed her demands and snapped her eyes shut tight.
“Okay.” She told her, as if Jasmine couldn’t see that she complied. Jasmine leaned in and pressed her lips softly against Cinna’s. Cinna closed whatever space was left between them. Quickly, Jasmine pulled back. Frowning, her gaze stayed glued to the floor, brown eyes glazed over as if looking for something. She sighed as Cinna sat for a moment confused.
“I don’t get it.”
Months passed and the girls were still as inseparable as ever. Nothing had changed and there were no more questions from Cinna about Jasmine’s secret. Jasmine herself was confused. Why hadn’t it worked?
October of first grade came upon them and double trouble wasn’t quite alone in their bubble.
“Cinna?” A small voice called from behind. Blue eyes widened as she whipped around.
“May!” She clung to her friend. “May! You’re going to school now!” Cinna grinned.
“That’s cause I’m five now” This so called, May, grinned proudly. Jasmine stood and watched the reunion, knowing May and Cinna had been friends since preschool. She knew a lot about Cinna, but not nearly as much as May knew. The kindergarten bell rang and May had trudged off.
Brown eyes twinkled as the sun shinned down upon the front lawn of Jasmine’s yard. Giggles echoed throughout the neighborhood as the autumn winds tickled the trees, making them dance as the two best friends spun in circles together in the strength of the gusts. Grinning they tumbled over on their backs on the green grass. Light hair swirling in dark, they lay there, their fingers intertwined and a smile upon each face.
“Jasmine?” The blonde whispered, staring at the round face of the other.
“Hmm?” was the reply as brown eyes met blue.
“I want to know your secret.” She begged.
A pause.
“I don’t know.”
“Please?” Cinna pleaded. Smiling, Jasmine faced the younger girl and placed a soft kiss upon her lips. Cinna closed her eyes and let Jasmine have control before returning the kiss with slight pressure. When they pulled apart, two glass hearts lay on the ground between them. One red, the other purple.
“This is my secret.” Jasmine whispered, picking up the purple.
“Here you go.” Cinna smiled softly and placed the red heart in Jasmine’s hand. Hesitantly, Jasmine gave her the purple treasure. Cinna grinned in glee.
“Don’t lose it.” Jasmine said. She wasn’t quiet sure if she was saying it to herself, Cinna, or even if she was saying it to some higher being in hope.
“I won’t.” Cinna replied.
The sun set on that beautiful day. Autumn changed to winter and winter slipped into the start of the new year that sat upon the chair of the present.
“Where is it?” Jasmine cried in horror. She only set it on her nightstand like she did every night. The night has gone and so too was the item she prized. Frantically, she flung clothes and objects into their rightful places until her floor was no longer littered with unwanted filth. Panting, she felt tears well up n the corner of her eyes. Telling herself it would be alright she readied for school, but not without her eyes checking every possible location it could be.
As she crossed the street she cheered up immediately as she saw a familiar face racing toward her. They met in the middle.
“Jasmine, I need to tell you something.” Cinna started. Jasmine nodded as she looked over Cinna’s shoulder and saw May running toward them. Cinna held out the purple heart. Jasmine put out her hand and froze suddenly staring at the forgotten item.
“Cinna! Look what I found!” May shouted as she just about reached them. Jasmine was deaf to all words as she saw within May’s hand a treasured red object that was once hers.
CRASH!
The tinkle of small glass bits spreading over the ground caught Jasmine’s attention as she looked down upon the bits of purple. Tears in her eyes as she kneeled down to begin picking them up. She looked up, expecting to see Cinna or even May lean down and help her pick up the pieces, but only seeing the two walk away together hand in hand.
So now Jasmine kneels in the middle of the road, piecing together the pieces of what she had given so carelessly. But imagine how hard it must be to put it back together when your vision is blurred and your insides are aching.
