Kneeling on the lounge suite, she drew a smiley face in the condensation of the window above her. The wind whistled around the house taking her by surprise. A hand grasped her waist tenderly pulling her backwards from the frosty pane, to have her head lay on her lovers lap. He looked down at her and smiled as she poked his cheek affectionately, ‘Good morning sleepy head’.
“Morning.”
“Do you have to work today?” a silly question to ask she knew.
“Yep.”
She sighed looking away toward the kitchen. ‘You’d like a coffee then?’
A grin tore onto his face, ‘Not before a kiss’.
Her eyes smiled back as their lips met. He pulled away, gently sliding from under her, replacing a cushion for his knees under her head. She tightened her nightgown, standing to then head to the kitchen as he made way to the bathroom.
Her feet patted the tiled floor only to halt when she reached the sink, filing a pot with hot water. She’d have preferred to use the kettle but the only power point in the kitchen didn’t work and she was tired of using the kettle in the lounge room, though ‘sleepy-head’ thought it a great idea. As the pot boiled she began to make him some breakfast to eat on his journey to work, she knew he’d never have the time otherwise.
Crisp bread popped up from within the toaster as the boiling water began bubbling out the pot. She turned the stove off and buttered his bread.
She placed his steaming black coffee on the kitchen counter and drew a smiley face with a message, on a note, before placing it in a paper bag along with the toast. He came out from the bathroom wearing his sleek new suit, shirt and tie still undone laying his jacket on a kitchen stool to reach for his coffee and took a sip.
‘Thanks for the coffee Hun, really needed that.”
“That’s ok” she said absentmindedly, looking at the clock on the wall above the fridge.
“Don’t worry I won’t be late.” he said taking another sip of his coffee.
She turned to face him, smiling, she knew he was right.
He retreated to his bedroom to gather his suitcase and button up.
“I made some breakfast for you to eat on the way.” she called aloud.
“Oh thanks!”
She handed it to him as he stood in the front door. ‘ Tall, dark, handsome and soon to be a wealthy businessman. I’m a lucky woman.’
“ Yes, yes you are.” he mumbled just before a goodbye kiss.
“Goodluck.”
He turned walking down the steps to the street, opening his breakfast parcel, he noticed the note inside. He began to cross the road, toast in his mouth, thinking of taking the shortcut to the train station. He opened the note to be greeted by a smiley face and the inscription,
“I Love You Damien”
He stopped, turning back to blow her a kiss. She screamed running toward him “DAMIEN!”
“I know thanks, I love you Hannah”
“NO DAMI…”
It was too late, the car screeched on delayed brakes pummelling Damien into the road.
Note in in the neighbours lawn.
