Orange-Peel Smiles

Three oranges sat on a table round
juicy, bursting with the flavor
to be eaten
was their only purpose
for young girls,
twirling in their dress-up dresses,
silly hats, frilly gloves,
their faces sloppily
made-up games had filled their afternoon.
A ray of sunlight
(warming the oranges with hope)
burst through a tainted window,
and the girls danced
as it radiated
throughout the Florida
room to pretend that they were anywhere
but there were the oranges,
each chopped into three slices;
however, their fate
was not the terrible gnashing
and tearing of teeth at their sinewy pulp,
but rather the tangy, yet sweet,
sensation of being Sunkist
while evolving into three little girls’
smiles.
