A/N: This was written like a script for a moive so as your read try to picture it in your head.
Riyan (voice): “There’s six billion people in this world, six billion people and sometimes…all you need is one,” as said by Lucas on “One Tree Hill.” Usually you have a pretty good idea of who this person is. Like once your eyes meet there’s a connection. However, occasionally there are times when that person could be right in front of you and you don’t even realize it until it’s too late.
Why don’t I start at the beginning. I’m Riyan, and as you probably already guessed, this story is about me and my one person. Only there’s a catch…. I have no idea who that person is, because it certainly isn’t Adam. Wait, I’m getting ahead of myself, why don’t I explain my relationship with Adam.
Our moms were best friends when Adam and I were growing up, so naturally we became best friends, well until we were six. My dad got a job when I turned five, so we moved from the sunny beaches of Hawaii to the rainy days of Seattle. When I was six my family and I went back to Hawaii, which is when I saw Adam again. And let me tell you, it wasn’t a happy reunion. We ended up getting into an argument, and then into a fight. He pushed me so I punched him in the face, giving him a black eye. Our moms weren’t too happy with us, my dad, however, tried to sign me up for karate lessons when we went back to Seattle. Anyways, ever since that day Adam and I have hated each other. Ya know, hates not a strong enough word for what Adam and I feel towards each other. I don’t think there’s a strong enough word to describe it. So you see, how could he possibly be my one person?
Scene 1
(Cuts to a yellow two story house with an upstairs deck, the camera zooms into a room where Riyan and Lynn are cleaning. Riyan is standing on a ladder digging through the top shelves of the closet and Lynn is standing at the foot of the ladder.)
Riyan: I can’t believe that I have to spend my few days of summer cleaning out the spare room!
(She throws down a box from the closet and climbs down the ladder and walks over to a shelf and starts to take the books off of them and put them into a bag.)
Lynn (as she looks through the box that Riyan had taken down from the closet): Hey! Pictures of you as a kid. Ahh, don’t you look adorable.
Riyan: Lynn, you’re supposed to be helping me clean, not go for a stroll down memory lane.
Lynn: Ry, get serious. I don’t even clean my own room, so why would I help clean this room?
Riyan: Cause you’re my best friend and I volunteered you. Plus it’s not like you have a boyfriend to spend the day with.
Lynn (sarcastically): Thanks Ry, I really needed to be reminded about that, cause ya know I was totally gonna go home and get dressed up for a date.
Riyan: You’re welcome.
(Lynn puts the picture back in the box and picks it up, another picture falls to the ground. Lynn puts the box down and picks up the picture and looks at it.)
Lynn (referring to the picture): Is this of you and Adam?
(Riyan stops cleaning off the shelves and looks at the picture)
Riyan: Yeah, when were five. I think that was taken at my birthday party.
Lynn: He’s so cute! I wonder what he looks like now.
Riyan: Get that thought out of your head.
Lynn: What thought?
Riyan: He’s the enemy, we do no think that the enemy’s cute.
Lynn: What do you have against Adam?
Riyan:--
Lynn (points at Riyan): And don’t you dare say it’s because he pushed you down when you were six.
Riyan: I don’t know why I hate him okay, I just do. It’s been like that ever since my family and I moved here. He hates me and I hate him, a hate hate relationship.
Lynn: Hate to break this to you Ry, but people change. Who knows, he could have actually grown up in the last ten years.
Riyan (laughing): HA! I high doubt that.
Lynn: Why? I mean you don’t even know him.
Riyan: I don’t have to know him. I already know that he’s a lazy ass who’s irresponsible.
Lynn: And how do you know this?
Riyan: The lazy ass I’m guessing, but the reason why he’s coming here is because he got into some trouble with the police so his mom is sending him here for a year. She’s probably hoping it’ll straighten him out.
Lynn: Okay, maybe you’re right…
Riyan: I know I’m right.
Lynn: But still be nice to him.
Riyan: Hey, I’ll be nice to him if he’ll be nice to me.
Lynn: God, you’re such a five year old.
Riyan: And proud of it.
Scene 2
(Cuts to Adam packing, Spencer is sitting on his bed.)
Adam: Hand me my laptop, will you Spence?
Spencer (as he reaches for the computer and hands it to Adam): I can’t believe your mom’s making you leave, and Junior year too! It’s supposed to be the best year ever.
Adam: I thought that was senior year.
Spencer: It’s junior. Why did you even start to hang out with those guys in the first place? If it wasn’t for them you’d be...
Spencer and Adam: Surfing instead of packing
Adam: I know Spence. Do you think I want to be going? Do you think I want to spend a year living with Riyan and her family?
(Adam walks in his bathroom)
(Spencer thinks to himself for a moment)
Spencer: Riyan? Hey, isn’t that the girl that-
Adam (as he walks out of the bathroom carrying all of his toiletries): Yeah, that’s the one.
(Spencer starts to laugh)
Adam: It’s not funny!
Spencer (still laughing): Oh yes it is! You got beat up by a six year old girl!
Adam: I was six too.
Spencer (still laughing): Still funny.
Adam: Spence….
Spencer: Yeah?
Adam: Shut up.
(Spencer stops laughing)
Scene 3
(cuts to Seattle airport. Riyan, her mom, and her dad are waiting for Adam at baggage clam)
Riyan (bored): Couldn’t he just take a cab home?
Meg (angrily): Riyan! How could you say such a thing like that? If we weren’t here to greet him it might seem that we don’t want him here.
Riyan: Well some of us don’t.
Meg (in a warning tone): Riyan….
Riyan: Could I take a cab home then?
Meg: No! We, as a family, are going to greet and take him home.
(Riyan angrily sits down in a chair next to her dad)
Riyan (under her breath): Perfect way to spend the last day of summer.
Meg: Did you say something?
Riyan: No.
(Meg turns and watches the people come down the escalators)
Todd: Ry, could you at least try to be nice to him?
Riyan: Let me think about that Dad. (pretends to think) Um no.
Todd: For me?
Riyan: If he’s not nice to me why should I be nice to him?
Todd: Because you take the high road? Hey he might even be nice.
Riyan: Ha, fish will fly before that happens.
Meg (as she spots Adam): There he is! (calling out to Adam) Adam, over here!
Riyan: Great.
(Adam walks over to them)
Meg (as she hugs him): Adam! You’ve gotten so tall!
Adam: Well that’s what ten years’ll do to you.
Meg (points to Todd and Riyan): That’s my husband Todd, and of course you remember Riyan.
Adam (bitterly): How could I forget?
Riyan (to Adam): Looks like your eye didn’t scar, too bad. Next time I’ll hit you harder.
Adam (gets closer to her): Go ahead, take a shot. You probably wouldn’t even leave a mark.
(Riyan tries to hit him but Todd intervenes)
Todd (as he pulls Riyan away from Adam): Not here Riyan.
(they all start to walk out of the airport and into the parking lot)
Meg (to Todd): Now aren’t you glad she didn’t take karate lessons? Just image what she’d do to Adam.
Todd: Probably what she’ll do to him when they get into there next argument.
Meg: And who says they’re going to get into another argument?
Todd: Past experience with the two and by the way they’re behaving right now.
(he points up ahead to Riyan and Adam. Riyan is sitting in the car and Adam is banging on the window for her to unlock the door)
Meg: This is going to be one hell of a year.
Todd: You could say that again.
(he wraps an arm around her shoulder and they walk to the car)
Scene 4
(cuts to Riyan and Adam walking up the stairs in her house to their rooms. A dog is following them)
Riyan (stops and opens a door): This is your room.
(they walk in)
Riyan: Through that door (points to a glass door): Is the deck and through that door (points to another door) is the bathroom.
(Adam puts his suitcases on the bed)
Riyan: The room we just passed was my parents room and my room is next door. Well that’s about it so I’ll see you at dinner.
(she starts to leave but comes back in)
Riyan: And the dogs name is Duke, he won’t bite you…sadly.
(she leaves, Duke follows her)
(Adam unpacks then he takes a box out on to the deck and begins to set up his telescope. When he’s done he walks over to the deck railing and hits his head on it several times)
Scene 5
(cut to Riyan, Adam, Meg, and Todd sitting at the dinner table eating. Riyan and Adam are sitting across from each other, just twirling their forks in their food)
Todd: So, Adam….what sports do you play?
Adam: I surf, that’s about it.
(he takes a bite of food)
Todd: Well we don’t get much of that around here, the water’s too cold.
Adam: Doesn’t matter, I didn’t even bring my board.
(silence)
Todd: Riyan figure skates, she’s very good.
Meg: But her main thing is ballet. She’s the best at her dance center.
Riyan: May I please be excused.
(she starts to get up)
Meg: No, you may not. Now sit back down.
(Riyan sits back down and starts to play with her food again)
Meg: Would anyone like desert?
Riyan and Adam: No.
Meg: Fine, then you can both be excused.
(Adam and Riyan both jump up from their sets. They put their dishes in the sink and go up stairs)
(as they go up stairs they start to argue)
Adam: Get out of my way!
Riyan: I was here first.
(they shove each other)
Riyan: Move!
Adam: You move!
Meg (to Todd): Do you think they’ll ever stop fighting?
Todd: When they realize what’s in front of them.
Meg: And what’s that, pure hatred?
Todd: Never mind.
(hear Adam and Riyan in the background)
Riyan: What are you, five?
Adam: What are you five?
Riyan: Oh that’s very mature.
Adam: Oh that’s very mature.
Riyan: AAAAHHHHHHH!!!!
(hear a door slam, then another)
Todd: This year’s gonna be fun.
Meg: Oh yeah.
(she takes a sip of her wine)
Scene 6
(cuts to Riyan and Adam standing in front of the school the next morning)
Riyan: We’ll meet back at my car at the end of the day, okay. And if you need to find me I’m in the library at lunch.
Adam: Got it, but I won’t need you.
Riyan: Perfect, see you at the end of the day.
Max: Riyan!
(Riyan and Adam turn and see a guy walking towards them)
Riyan: Hey
(he kisses her)
Riyan: How was your summer in Spain?
Max: It was good, but it would have been better if you were there
(he puts his arm around her shoulders)
Max (pointing to Adam): Who’s this?
Riyan: Max, this is Adam, he’s staying with us this year. Adam, this is Max, my boyfriend.
Max (to Adam): Hey.
Adam: Hey.
(Max turns his attention back to Riyan)
Max: So have you gotten your schedule yet?
Riyan: Just going, wanna come?
Max: Sure.
(they walk off)
Riyan (calling over her shoulder): Bye Adam!
Scene 7
(cuts to a class room. Riyan is sitting at a desk staring out the window. The bell rings and Adam runs in a few seconds later)
Mr. Hension: So glad you could join us Mr.…
Adam: Rogers. Adam Rogers. Sorry I was late, I’m new and I kinda got lost.
Mr. Hension: Just take a seat Mr. Rogers.
(Adam looks around and sees that the only available desk is next to Riyan)
Adam: Uh, Mr. Hension is that the only open seat?
Mr. Hension: Either that seat, or find yourself a different class.
Adam: That’s seat’s perfect.
(he walks over and sits in the empty seat)
Riyan: What are you doing here?
Adam: What does it look like? I’m taking this class.
Riyan: What do you have next period?
Adam (looks at his schedule): Um, Algebra two with Mr. Riving.
Riyan: Let me see your schedule.
(Adam hands her the piece of paper)
(Riyan looks over it)
Riyan: Shoot me. Just kill me now.
Adam (taking back his schedule): What?
Riyan: We have every class together.
Adam: Your kidding, right?
Riyan: Why would I joke about this?
Mr. Hension (to class): Look to the person you’re sitting next to and say hello.
(Riyan and Adam glare at each other)
Mr. Hension: You’ve just met your lad partner for the whole year.
Riyan and Adam: What?!
Adam: This is going to be a long year.
Riyan: A very long year.
(the both groan and hit their heads on their desks)
Scene 8
(cuts to Riyan sitting at her desk in her room. She’s talking on the phone while doing her history homework)
Riyan: I can’t believe it’s only December! It feels like he’s been here for three years! I’m so glad tomorrows Monday.
(she listens to what person on other side of the phone is saying)
Riyan: I know I’m being overly dramatic Lynn, but you know that’s what I do when I’m pissed!
(she listens again)
Riyan: What did he do this time? It’s more of what he didn’t do! First he hogs the bathroom, second, this morning he finished off the cereal so I didn’t get to eat anything till I got home today, third, I almost killed myself on his stupid skate board, and fourth-- what? I so do not like him! How could you even say that?!
(music starts basting through the walls)
Riyan: Hang on Lynn.
(she pounds on the wall)
Riyan: Adam! Turn it down, I’m on the phone!
(the music gets louder)
Riyan (to Lynn): He’s such a pain in the ass! I have to go Lynn, see you tomorrow.
(she hangs up the phone and walks next door to Adam's room and barges in)
Adam (startled): What the hell! Haven’t you ever head of knocking?!
Riyan: Turn down the music and I wouldn’t even have to come in here!
Adam: What?
Riyan: Turn. Down. The. Music!
Adam: What?
(Riyan walks over to his stereo and turns the music off)
Adam: Hey! I was listening to that!
Riyan: And now you’re not.
(she turns and starts to walk out)
Adam: You’re such a bitch!
Riyan (as she walks out of his room): And you’re a dick.
(she walks back to her room and slams the door. Adam then picks up the phone in his room and dials a number)
Adam (into the phone): Knew it would work.
Spencer: What? Driving them all crazy so they’ll send you home?
Adam: They live with Riyan remember, they’re used to crazy.
Spencer: Still not getting along are we?
Adam: We’ll never get along.
Spencer (getting food out of the fridge): So what was your plan anyway?
Adam: Play my music as loud as I could so she’d get off the phone, which she’s on like ninety percent of the time. God, it’s like it’d glued to her ear!
Spencer: Why don’t you just try to get along with her?
Adam: ‘Cause it’s impossible. She’s too much of a perfectionist.
Spencer: You’re overreacting.
Adam: No, I’m not. She takes her grades way too seriously.
Spencer: So you hate her because she wants good grades? (sarcastically) That makes total sense
(he takes a bite of an apple)
Adam: She’s just so up tight. Maybe if she learned to relax then I could possibly try to be nice to her.
Spencer: Or you could just try harder now.
Adam (thinks for a minute): No, I don’t think so.
Spencer: You’re hopeless, you know that right?
Adam: I had a feeling.
Spencer: So how’s school going?
Adam: It sucks, as usual. How’s Hawaii? I bet you’re getting ready to go surfing right now.
Spencer: Yeah, I wish you were going.
Adam: Me too.
Spencer: I better go Adam, bye.
Adam: Bye Spence.
Scene 8
(cuts to Adam stand in front of a ballet studio. He walks inside and up to the front counter where a lady is sitting)
Adam (to the lady): Hi, I’m looking for Riyan Lawrence, I was waiting for her outside but she never came--
Lady: She’s not here.
Adam: But I saw her get dropped off here three hours ago.
(the lady looks through a stack of papers and hands Adam a stick note)
Lady: She’s at this address.
Scene 9
(cuts to Adam standing in front of a ice rink. He looks at the address in the paper and back up to the one on the side of the building)
Adam (to himself): What is she doing here?
(he walks inside to the front desk)
Adam (to the girl sitting at the desk): Do you where I can find Riyan Lawrence?
Girl (not even looking up from her magazine): Down the stairs and to the right. You can’t miss her.
Adam: Thanks.
(he follows her directions and when he is level with the ice he sees Riyan skating. He’s amazed at how good she is so he sits down in the first row of bleachers and watches her. She does a layback spin, a double axel, a camel spin, a triple toe triple toe combination and then a triple salchow. Adam claps, starling her)
(Riyan skates over to him)
Riyan: What the hell are you doing here?
Adam: Your mom wanted me to pick you up from ballet. Well I went there and they told me to come here. Where did you learn to skate like that?
Riyan: My grandpa taught me when I was seven.
Adam: So I take it your parents don’t know you come here instead of ballet?
Riyan: My dad does, but not my mom. I’m too afraid to tell her.
Adam: Well you’re secret is safe with me.
Riyan (with a relieved look on her face): Thank you.
(she walks off the ice and sits next to Adam and begins to takes off her skates)
Adam: Why is it so important to you?
Riyan (still taking off her skates): What, skating?
Adam: Yeah.
Riyan: Ballet I do for my mom because she loves it so much. She was a dancer you know. That’s how she met my dad. His sister dragged him to a ballet and when he saw my mom on stage he new she was the one. Anyways, skating I do for me.
Adam: Why not just do what you want to do?
Riyan: Because I want to make my mom happy, plus ballet helps me with my skating.
(she puts her skates in her duffle bag and stands up)
Riyan: Ready?
Adam (stands up): I take back what I said earlier, you’re not a bitch.
Riyan: And you’re not a dick.
Adam: But I still don’t like you.
Riyan: Same here. I mean, I still think you’re a baby.
Adam: And I still think you’re annoying as hell.
(they walk out of ice rink)
Scene 10
(cuts to Meg, Todd, Riyan, and Adam eating dinner)
Meg: So Ry, how was ballet?
Riyan (not looking up from plate): Okay, same as usual.
Meg: Have they announced the parts of the ballet yet?
Riyan: Not yet.
Meg: Well no worry, I’m sure you got the lead.
Riyan: Don’t know. (to Todd) Can we go get the tree after dinner?
Adam: You mean the Christmas tree?
(Riyan nods)
Adam: But it’s only December first.
Riyan: We always get the tree on the first because they (indicates to her parents) go on a cruise until the twenty-third.
Adam: And you stay here alone for that long?
Riyan: I stay here until I run out of food, then I go stay with Lynn. (to Todd) So can we?
Todd: No need. I picked one up on my way home from work. I’ll set it up after dinner and you and Adam can decorate it.
Scene 11
(cuts to living room. The tree is up, Todd is sitting on the ground playing with the train, Meg is in the kitchen going dishes, Adam is trying to untangle lights, and Riyan is standing on a ladder putting on the already untangled lights and singing along to Christmas music at the top of her lungs)
Adam (to Riyan): Do you have to sing? You’re making my ears bleed.
Riyan: Yes, now hurry with the rest of the lights.
(Adam stands up form the couch and walks over to Riyan)
Adam: Here.
(He hands her the lights and just as she grabs them Duke runs under the ladder and knocks it over. Riyan falls off but Adam catches her, then he falls and they both start laughing)
Meg (running over to them): Are you two okay? That looked like it hurt.
Riyan (laughing): I’m fine (she stands up and rolls up her shirt sleeve to revel a huge bruise) Adam?
Adam (as he gets up): I’m good.
Meg (after seeing bruise on Riyan’s arm): Go Lord! Look at that bruise!
Riyan (pulls down sleeve): Oh…must have hit something when I fell. Well, I’d better go finish my homework.
(she runs upstairs before anyone can say another word)
Todd: Well that was strange.
Adam: I should go see if she needs any help.
(he runs upstairs after Riyan)
Meg: And that was even stranger.
Scene 12
(cuts to Adam knocking on Riyan’s door)
Adam: Can I come in?
Riyan: Sure.
(Adam walks and sits down in her desk chair and looks at Riyan, who’s sitting on her bed)
Adam: How did you really get that bruise?
Riyan: I told you, I hit something when I fell.
Adam: Come on Riyan, tell me the truth.
Riyan: I can’t.
Adam: Why? Did someone hurt you?
Riyan: No, it’s just embarrassing.
Adam: More embarrassing then getting a black eye from a six year old girl with cooties?
Riyan: I did not have cooties!
Adam: Riyan, spill.
Riyan: Well about five minutes before you came to the rink I uh….. I uh lost control and skated right into a side panel.
Adam (leans closer to her and whisperers): I win.
(he gets up and walks out of her room)
Scene 13
(cuts to outside of Riyan’s house. Meg and Todd are about to leave for their cruise)
Riyan (hugs both her parents): Bye mom, bye dad, have a good time.
Meg: We will. Now don’t forget to study for your finals, and go to school each day, and don’t’ just eat junk food. And please try not to kill each other.
Riyan: Will do mom. Now go or you’re going to miss your flight.
(Meg and Todd get to their car and drive off. Adam and Riyan start to walk back to the house)
Adam: So, what are you doing to night?
Riyan: Going over to Max’s. I should be home by eleven. What about you?
Adam: Talking to Spencer and watching TV.
Riyan: What a way to spend a Sunday night.
Adam: I know, perfect.
(Riyan looks over at Adam)
Adam: What?
Riyan: That’s the first time we had a conversation with out arguing.
Adam: Well what do you know, it was.
Scene 14
(cuts to later that night. Adam is asleep on the couch in the living room with the TV on. Riyan walks in through the front door, waking Adam)
Adam: How was your date?
(Riyan doesn’t say anything, she just walks straight upstairs to her room. This gets Adam’s attention so he follows her upstairs)
Adam (as he walks into her room): So how was your--
(Riyan turns to face him and he sees her beat up face)
Adam: Date. Are you okay?
Riyan: I’m fine….
Adam: Your face says otherwise. Come on, lets go clean you up.
(he leads her into the bathroom)
Adam (as he gets a towel wet): What happened?
(Riyan starts to cry)
Adam (as he wipes her face off with the wet towel): It was Max, wasn’t it?
Riyan: Yeah.
Adam: That bruise on your arm, he gave it to you, didn’t he.
Riyan: Yeah.
Adam: Has he done this before?
Riyan: Not this bad.
(she starts to cry harder)
Adam: Why don’t I call Lynn.
Riyan: No, don’t call anyone.
Adam: He didn’t do anything else did he?
Riyan: No, all he did was hit me.
Adam: Why?
Riyan: He had been drinking, not when I was there but I could smell it on his breath, and we got into a fight. I told him that I wanted to break up, he didn’t, so we started yelling at each other, and then he hit me, and when I tried to defend myself he hit me again. So then I picked up my purse and hit him in the head with it, then ran all the way here.
Adam: Why didn’t you call me Ry? I would have come to pick you up.
(Riyan looks up at Adam with a curious look)
Adam: What?
Riyan: That’s the first time you’ve called me “Ry.”
Adam: Well it’s the first time we’ve acted like friends.
(awkward silence)
Adam: Why don’t you go get in bed and I’ll get you an ice pack for your eye.
(cuts to Adam handing Riyan the ice pack)
Riyan: Thanks Adam.
Adam: No problem. If you need anything I’ll be in my room.
(he turns to leave)
Riyan: Adam….
(Adam turns back around)
Riyan: I’m glad you came to live here.
Adam: Me too Ry. Now try to get some sleep.
(he walks out of her room and back to his)
(he gets into his bed and turns out the light. Riyan then walks in)
Riyan: You awake?
Adam (laying down with his eyes closed): No, this is me talking in my sleep.
Riyan: I afraid he’s gonna come here in the middle of the night.
(Adam sits up and turns on the light)
Adam: Do you want to stay with me tonight?
Riyan: Is that okay?
(Adam pulls the covers over)
Adam: Get in.
(Riyan walks over and lays down next to him and closes her eyes. Adam puts the covers over her then turns out his light and goes to sleep)
Scene 15
cuts to the next day at school. Adam and Riyan are at her locker getting her books
Lynn (walking up to them): Where were you all day? And why are you with Adam?
(Riyan turns and faces Lynn)
Lynn (to Adam): Did you do this to her? I’ll kill you!
(she lunges toward him)
Adam (backing away from Lynn): I took care of her! Her dumb ass boyfriend did this.
Riyan (quietly): Ex-boyfriend.
Lynn: Then I’ll kill him.
Adam: I have first dibs.
(Lynn and Riyan exchange curious glances when Adam says this)
Lynn (to Riyan): Are you okay?
Riyan: I’m fine…. really. Just a black eye.
Lynn: Then why weren’t you here today?
Riyan: I stayed home. We just came to get my school work.
(they all walk out to Riyan’s car, where Max is waiting. When Riyan sees him she takes a hold of Adam’s hand)
Adam (to Max, warningly): Leave her alone.
Max: You can’t tell me what to do. Riyan’s my girlfriend and it’s our problem, not yours. If I want to talk to her I will.
Adam: You’re so wrong. The second you hit her it became my problem. And if you ever do this to her again I’ll hurt you a hundred times worse then you hurt her. Kay Pumpkin?
Max: Is that a threat?
Adam: No (lets go of Riyan’s hand and punches Max) that’s a promise. You will never come near her again.
(the three get into the car)
Riyan (to Max, who’s still lying on the ground): And it’s ex- girlfriend.
(they drive off)
Scene 16
(cuts to Riyan and Lynn sitting out on the deck on Riyan’s house while doing their homework)
Lynn: So are you going to tell me what’s going on?
Riyan (deeply absorbed in her history book): What’s going on?
Lynn: Between you and Adam.
Riyan (still reading): There’s nothing going on between me and Adam. We’re friends, that’s all.
Lynn: Are you really that naive?
Riyan (looks up from her book): About what?
Lynn: About Adam! He likes you, duh.
Riyan (starts laughing): Are you high? He doesn’t like me.
Lynn: Yes he does. No one becomes friends over night.
Riyan: Of course they do.
Lynn: Who then?
Riyan: Rory and Jess form “Gilmore girls,” they hated each other but then became friends.
Lynn: And ended up falling in love.
Riyan: Brook and Lucas off of “One Tree Hill.”
Lynn: Fell in love.
Riyan: Really?
Lynn: Yes.
Riyan (to herself): I have got to catch up on my shows.
Lynn (getting Riyan’s attention): Ry, focus. None of those count, they’re all made up characters, which proves my point.
Riyan: It proves nothing.
Lynn: Yes it does.
Riyan: No it doesn’t.
Lynn: Yes!
(Adam walks out onto the deck caring a tray of food)
Riyan: No!
Adam (as he sets the food on the table): No what?
Riyan and Lynn: Nothing.
Adam: Which usually means something. So what are you studying now?
Riyan (notices food): Ooh, food.
(she takes a handful of chips)
Adam (as he sits down in a chair next to Riyan): Are you always hungry?
Lynn and Riyan: Yes.
Adam (rolls eyes): So what are you doing now?
Riyan: Well I’m studying History and Lynn is going to repeat the eleventh grade.
Adam: Why?
Riyan: She hasn’t started studying yet.
Lynn (to Riyan): Hey! Final are in two weeks, I still have time.
Adam: I haven’t started either. I’ll probably just cram the night before each test.
Riyan: I would be so nervous if I were you two.
Adam: When did you start studying? Last week?
(Lynn laughs)
Adam: What’s so funny?
Lynn: She starts studying the day after Thanksgiving--
Riyan (warningly): Lynn…..
Lynn: For two hours every day.
Adam: And you’re still studying, why?
Riyan: For the scholarships. If I can’t get full scholarships to any colleges then I can’t go.
Adam: Won’t your parents help?
Riyan: My mom won’t pay for any colleges unless it’s a performing arts school, like Julliard.
Adam: And you don’t want to go there.
Riyan: If I went there it would be like living in Hell.
Lynn: Okay, enough taking about colleges, it’s depressing. Lets just focus on the finals.
Scene 17
(cuts to school two weeks later. Riyan--her black eye is all better--is at her locker looking over chemistry with Lynn)
Lynn (to Riyan): Ry, you need to take a break, you’re studying way too hard.
(Adam walks up to them)
Lynn: Adam, tell her she’s studying way to hard.
Adam (to Riyan unconvincingly): You’re studying way to hard.
Lynn: (sarcastically) You’re a big help. Ry, if you don’t stop you’re going to collapse from exhaustion.
Riyan (as she closes her book and puts it into her backpack): Lynn, I’m fine.
Lynn: No you’re not.
Adam: She’s right Ry, you need a break.
Riyan: Friday’s the last day of school, I’ll take a break then, kay?
Adam: No, not okay.
Riyan: Well I’m sorry, but you have no choice, I do as please.
Adam: That’s it we’re leaving.
(he takes a hold of Riyan’s hand and they start to walk down the hall)
Riyan: And going where? Schools about to start.
Adam: Not for us.
Riyan: We cannot ditch school.
Adam: We can and we are.
(Riyan looks back at Lynn who smiling and waving good-bye to them)
(cuts to Adam putting Riyan in the car)
Riyan: We can’t skip school, especially the day before finals!
(Adam gets into the car and starts the engine)
Riyan: Adam, are you even listening to me?
Adam: I’m choosing not to.
Riyan: ADAM!
(they drive out of school parking lot)
Riyan (as she looks at her watch): Great, school just started.
Adam (glances at Riyan): Have you ever ditched?
Riyan (speeds up as she talks): No, and thanks to you today will go on my permanent record, which colleges will see, and once they see that I ditched school they won’t accept me, and then all of my hard work will be for nothing!
Adam: Wow, you think too much.
Riyan: Yeah, well you think too little… so where are you taking me?
Adam: Anywhere you want to go. Today’s your day.
(Riyan opens her mouth to say something but Adam tops her)
Adam: And school is not an option.
(Riyan closes her mouth and glares at him)
Adam: Seriously, if you could anywhere in Seattle, where would it be?
(Riyan thinks and then smiles at Adam)
Scene 18
(cuts to them standing in front of an opera house)
Adam: But I thought you hated ballet.
Riyan: Hate dancing it, but love watching it, and the Nutcracker is my favorite.
Adam: Then lets go, my treat.
(Riyan smiles at Adam and take his hand in hers and they walk into the building)
(cuts to them sitting in there seats waiting for the ballet to start)
Adam: So why haven’t you told you’re mom you quite?
Riyan: I already told you, I’m scared to tell her, she could take away my skating.
Adam: But you’d find a way to skate, I know it. So the truth please?
(lights go out and the curtains rise)
Riyan: Shh, it’s starting.
Scene 19
(cuts to them walking out of the building)
Riyan: Can you believe that I haven’t seen that since I was seven?
Adam: Why so long?
Riyan: What’s when I started ballet, and it just took over my life. You know, I have danced every day since I was ten. This is the first time in six years that I have gotten a day to do what I want to do, thanks.
Adam: I’m glad you’re finally enjoying yourself.
(he and Riyan get into the car)
Adam: So what do you want to do now?
Riyan: Your choice.
Adam: But it’s your day.
Riyan: And I want to do what you want to do, now pick.
(Adam turns on the engine and pulls out of the parking lot)
Adam: I know where we can go.
Riyan (excitedly): Where?
Adam: You’ll see.
Scene 20
(cuts to them standing on the beach)
Riyan: The beach? Are you crazy?! It’s the middle of December and like thirty degrees!
(she puts her hood on ad pulls the strings so most of her face is covered)
(Adam starts laughing as he looks at Riyan)
Riyan: What’s so funny?
Adam: You.
Riyan: What?
Adam: You look like an Eskimo.
Riyan: So what, I’m cold. Why did you bring me here anyways?
Adam: No special reason. I just love the smell of the ocean.
Riyan (looking over at Adam): You miss Hawaii, don’t you?
Adam: Yeah, but now I’m having fun here.
Riyan: I miss it too.
Adam: Do you even remember it?
Riyan: Of course I do. I remember that every Saturday I would have fried Hawaiian bread and a bowl of sliced pineapple for breakfast. Then I’d go play with you for the rest of the day.
(she laughs to herself)
Riyan: Do you remember when we were playing baseball and we broke a window in your house with the ball?
Adam (starts laughing too): And right after is was replaced we broke it with a soccer ball--
Riyan: And then a football.
Adam: Did we ever get in trouble for that?
Riyan: I think it was our dad’s that got in trouble for teaching us.
(they both laugh)
Riyan: Those are my favorite memories as a kid, the ones of you and me in Hawaii. It’s funny, anytime I needed to get away from the real world I would think about the fun times we had, even though we hated each other. It’s odd, but even though I hated your guts I never stopped believing that you were my best friend. That’s the stupidest thing you’ve ever heard right?
Adam: Not at all, ‘cause I think the same thing.
(Riyan shivers and crosses her arms to keep warm)
Adam: Are you really that cold?
Riyan: Yes!
Adam: Come here then.
(he wraps her in his arms)
Adam (looks at her): Better?
Riyan (leans her head on his chest and snuggles closer to him): Much.
(she closes her eyes and they just stand there like that for a few minutes)
Adam: So what do you want to do next?
Riyan (still resting her head on Adam’s chest): What?
Adam: Well we still have half a day left, so what do you want to do?
(she looks up and Adam and then takes his hand in hers and they start to walk off the beach)
Riyan: Now I want to take you somewhere special.
Scene 21
(cuts to Riyan standing on the ice rink trying to get Adam out there with her)
Riyan (puts hands on her hips): Adam! Would you stop being such a baby and get out here!
Adam: I am not coming out on the ice.
Riyan: Why? Afraid of falling?
Adam: No…
Riyan: Them come out here then. I’ll help you.
(she reaches out her hand for him to take it)
Riyan: I promise, if you fall I fall.
(Adam hesitantly takes her hand and skates out onto the ice. They skate around for awhile, Riyan is skating backwards, while holding both of Adam’s hands, gliding him a cross the ice)
Riyan: See, it’s not so bad is it?
Adam: I guess not.
Riyan: Now try to pick up your feet and move by yourself.
(Riyan lets go of his hands and he tries to skate by himself but trips and falls on top of Riyan)
(both laughing)
Riyan: I told you I’d fall if you fell.
Adam: Are you okay?
Riyan: I’m fine.
(their faces get close enough to kiss and they just stare at each other. Riyan breaks the silence)
Riyan (looking away form Adam): You can’t get off me now.
Adam (realizing he’s still on top of her): Oh, sorry.
(he gets up and then helps her up)
Adam: Are you sure you’re okay?
Riyan: I’m not a china doll Adam. Now do you want to try again?
Adam: That’s okay. I think I’ll go sit down and watch you for awhile.
Riyan: Are you sure? ‘Cause we can go if you want to do something different.
Adam: Ry, go skate.
Riyan: Can you skate over to the bleachers?
Adam: I think I can manage.
(he crawls over to the bleachers, sits down next to an old man and watches Riyan skate)
Old man: Your girlfriends a very talented skater, who’s her coach?
Adam (still watching Riyan): She doesn’t have one. Her grandfather taught her when she was seven.
Old man: My grand-daughter is just learning to skate and I came to look for a coach for her.
Adam: I wouldn’t be any help for you….and she’s not my girlfriend.
Old man: Sorry. I just assumed by the way you two kept look at each other when you were skating.
Adam: Well we’re not.
Old man: Then why haven’t you been able to take your eyes off her just once since you sat down?
(Adam looks at the old man)
Old man: It was nice taking to you.
Adam (in thought): Yeah…
(he looks back at Riyan and watches her do a triple salchow)
Scene 22
(two months later. Riyan, Adam, and Lynn are waiting at the airport for Spencer)
Adam (complaining to Riyan): Do we have to go to the wedding?
Riyan: For the millionth time YES!
Adam: But why?
Riyan: Because he’s my uncle and we have to go. Besides, it’s not he ceremony, just the reception.
Adam: So no boring vows?
Riyan: No boring vows. And don’t forget you’ll have Spencer there to talk to.
Adam: So who’s going to be your date?
Riyan: Why do you care?
Adam: I don’t.
Riyan: I’m taking Lynn.
Lynn (jokingly puts her head on Riyan’s shoulder): Don’t we look cute together?
Adam: Adorable.
(Lynn goes and sits back down in a chair)
Adam: I have an idea, why don’t I take you and Spencer can take Lynn.
Riyan: Like a double date?
Adam: Yeah, but with friends.
Riyan: Then why don’t we all just go together?
Adam (disappointedly): We could do that too.
Riyan (sensing his disappointment): I’d love to be your date Adam.
Adam: Really?
Riyan (turns to Lynn): That is if Lynn doesn’t mind going with Spencer.
Lynn: Sure, as long as he’s nice.
Adam: He is.
(Lynn gives him them the thumbs up sign)
Riyan (to Adam): Hey could we stop at the mall on the way home?
Lynn: Well that was random.
Adam: Sure, but why?
Riyan: I just have get a dress for the wedding.
Lynn (confused): Dress? But you said you were going to wear pants--
Riyan: Hey isn’t that Spencer?
(he points towards the escalator. Adam turns and sees Spencer)
Adam: Spencer!
(he runs towards him)
(Riyan glares at Lynn)
Lynn: What?
Scene 23
(cuts to Riyan and Lynn trying on dresses)
Lynn (as she comes out of a dressing room wearing a dress): So what’s the deal Ry? You hate wearing dresses.
Riyan (sees Lynn’s dress): I like it. (spins around) What about this?
Lynn: I liked the last one better.
(they both go back into there changing rooms)
Lynn: You didn’t answer my question.
Riyan: I just want to look nice for my uncle’s wedding.
Lynn: Are you sure it’s not for a certain boy?
Riyan: I have no idea what you’re taking about.
(they come out of changing rooms again, but in their own clothes)
Riyan: Besides, when have I ever tried to impress a guy by wearing fancy clothes? You know that’s not my thing.
Lynn (stops Riyan): You’ll tell me when you like Adam right?
Riyan: You’re my best friend, I tell you everything.
Lynn: You didn’t tell me about Max and what he was doing.
Riyan: I promise, from now on I’ll tell you everything.
Lynn: Good.
Riyan: But I’ll never like Adam in that way.
Lynn: You keep telling yourself that.
Scene 24
(cuts to Riyan’s house. Adam, Riyan, and Spencer pull up, get out and walk into the house, where Meg is waiting for Riyan)
Riyan (to Meg): Hey mom, sorry we’re late but we stopped at the mall and then took Lynn home.
Meg (coldly): We need to talk… Now.
Riyan: But we have company.
(she points to Spencer)
Spencer (to Meg): Hello Mrs. Lawrence. Thank you for letting me come and visit.
Meg (kindly to Spencer): Nice to meet you. Any friend of Adam’s is a friend of ours. (she turns to Riyan) I called the ballet studio today.
Riyan: You did?
Adam: Uh oh.
Meg: Yeah, I wanted to find out how much your costume was going to cost and I got the strangest reply. They said that you weren’t in the recital this year and even more interesting, that you had quite all of your classes but one soft shoe class. What’s this all about Riyan?
Adam: We’ll be upstairs if anyone needs us. (to Spencer): Run.
(they run up the stairs)
Meg (voice rising): Where the hell have you been? And what happened to all of those checks I’ve given you? Have you been taking he money for yourself?
Riyan (voice rising): Your checks were never cashed, not a single penny is missing.
Meg: Then where have you been?
Riyan: The skating rink.
Meg: Why?
Riyan: Because I want to skate.
Meg: Well you won’t be going there anymore.
Riyan: But--
Meg: Your place is in the dance studio, not on a block of ice!
Riyan: My place is anywhere but a dance studio! I hate ballet, I have since I was seven.
Meg: But you’ve always wanted to be a dancer, ever since you could walk.
Riyan: No I haven’t, you’ve always wanted that for me.
Meg: But said that you wanted to dance.
Riyan: No I haven’t. Not once in my childhood did I ever say that I wanted to dance. However, I do recall saying that I wanted to skate.
(Todd walks in)
Todd: What’s going on? I could here you two fighting from the garage.
Meg: Did you know that she quit ballet to skate?
Todd: Yeah, her grandfather and I have been helping her with the money. In fact, her grandfather wants to train her.
Riyan: Really?
Todd: Yeah, I was just talking to him. He thinks you’re ready.
Meg: Out of the question! You are a dancer, not a skater. You’re going to stick with our plan and go to a performing art school after you graduate.
Riyan (to Meg): You can’t control my life forever you know. In a year I’ll be going off to college and calling my own shots.
Meg: How will you pay for college Riyan? You know I won’t.
Riyan: I’m in all AP classes and I have a 4.0 GPA, I’m eligible for a full ride scholarship.
Meg: Riyan--
(Riyan turns around and starts to walk up the stairs)
Riyan (as she walks): I’m going to the college of my choice and you can’t stop me mom.
(she goes into her room and slams the door)
(she sits on her bed and starts to cry. Adam walks in)
Adam (sitting down besides her): Are you okay Ry?
Riyan: Why doesn’t she understand that dance is something that I don’t want to do? Why does she keep forcing me?
Adam: Probably because she remembers how happy it made her feel when she was your age and she just wants you to feel the same way.
Riyan: But I feel that way when I’m skating, why doesn’t she see that?
Adam: Because she doesn’t want to. She wants you to be exactly like her, and she’s just having a hard time excepting that you’re not.
(Riyan wipes her face)
Adam: Come here.
(he pulls her into his arms and they hug)
Riyan: You’d think that she’d be happy that I found something that I love.
Adam: She is, but she’s having hard time showing it.
Riyan (pulls away from Adam and starts to wipe her tears away): I bet Spencer is wishing he had stayed in Hawaii.
Adam: Not a chance, he loves it here.
Riyan: You mean everything he’s seen between here and the airport?
Adam: And the mall
(Riyan laughs)
Adam (as he wipes a tear away from her cheek): There’s that smile that I love so much.
(they lean in to kiss but Spencer walks in)
Spencer: Hey Adam?
(Adam stands up but continues to look at Riyan)
Adam: Yeah?
Spencer: How do you work your TV? I’m pressing buttons but nothing’s happening.
Adam: I’ll be right there.
Adam (to Riyan): I’d better go before he breaks it. You gonna be okay?
Riyan: Yeah, I’ll be fine…
(Adam gets up; and as he walks past Spencer he hits him on the back of the head)
Spencer (as he rubs the back of his head): What was that for?
Adam: For your exquisite timing.
(they walk into his room leaving Riyan alone)
Riyan:… once I stop thinking about you.
Scene 25
(cuts to Riyan waking up to a taping noise at her door to the deck. She gets out of bed and slowly walks over to the door and peers out. She sees Adam standing there so she opens the door)
Riyan: What do you want? It’s two o’clock in the morning.
Adam: I want to show you something.
Riyan: And it can’t wait till morning?
Adam: It is morning.
Riyan: Until daylight hours?
Adam: No.
(he leads her out onto the deck)
Riyan (as she follows him): This had better be good.
(Adam looks through his telescope and makes adjustments with the knobs)
Adam: Kay, look through here.
(Riyan looks through the telescope and sees a galaxy)
Riyan (still looking at it): It’s beautiful. It’s a galaxy right?
Adam: Two actually. I love the story about it.
Riyan (looks at Adam): Could I here it?
(she looks back into the telescope)
Adam: There’s this god and goddess who hate each other, and I mean really hate. They would fight all the time and ended up destroying villages and towns through their arguing. So Zeus, you know Zeus right?
Riyan (sarcastically): Oh yeah, Zeus and I go way back.
Adam: Ha ha. Anyways, tired of their fighting, Zeus chained them up together for a thousand years--
Riyan: Well that’s just like asking for hell.
Adam: That’s what all the other gods and goddess thought, but Zeus knew better.
Riyan: So what happened when he unchained them?
Adam: What he knew would happen all along. The god and goddess had fallen in love. So Zeus sent them to live in the sky as galaxies so people would know that love really did exists, you just have to look underneath the hatred.
Riyan (staring at Adam): Now that was beautiful, and oddly enough, it sounds like you and me, you know, expect for the falling in love part.
(she walks back to her room)
Riyan: Night Adam, thanks for the bedtime story, even though I was already asleep before you told it to me.
(she walks into her room and shuts the door)
Adam: Yeah, expect for the falling in love part.
Scene 26
(cuts to wedding reception. Adam, Riyan, Lynn, and Spencer walk into the grand ballroom which has been transformed into a Winter Wonderland)
All (after looking around): Wow.
Riyan (as they all walk down the steps and down to their table): It’s beautiful, like a fairy tale.
Lynn and Spencer (they see food): Food! Bye.
(they both walk off)
Adam: I think they’ll make a good couple.
Riyan: And what makes you so sure?
Adam (as he pulls out a chair for her): Well they both love food, so they’ll always have something to do for a date.
(Riyan laughs as Adam sits down next to her)
Adam: I thought so.
(he stand back up)
Adam: I’m going to get some food before Spence and Lynn eat it all. Do you want anything?
Riyan: Whatever you’re having.
(cuts to later at the party)
Uncle Jack (to crowd): Thank you for coming everyone. Lucy and I are so happy that we could our marriage with our friends and family. And now I would like to share a dance with my lovely wife.
(music starts and Jack and Lucy walk out onto the dance floor and begin to dance. Then all the other couples go out to the dance floor and begin to dance too. Lynn and Spencer are among them)
Riyan (to Adam after she sees Lynn and Spencer dancing): Okay, maybe you were right.
Adam: About what? Cause you know, I’m right about so many things.
Riyan: So you were planning for that explosion in Chemistry the other day?
Adam: Okay, maybe not everything.
Riyan: I was talking about Lynn and Spencer.
(she points to them)
Riyan: They do make a cute couple.
Adam: What can I say, I’m good.
Riyan: Just not at Chemistry.
(Adam gets up and gives his hand to Riyan)
Adam: Wanna dance?
Riyan: I don’t dance.
Adam: A dancer that doesn’t dance. Now that’s a first.
Riyan: I mean I can’t dance….(points to dance floor were people are slow dancing) like that.
Adam: It’s easy, you just sway back and forth.
Riyan (as she takes his hand): Fine, but I gave you fair warning.
(they walk out onto the dance floor and start to dance)
Adam (after a minute): See, nothing to it. Want to try a spin?
Riyan: I don’t think soo--
(Adam spins her around and she falls back into his arms)
Adam: Tell me, how can you do like twenty spins in a matter of seconds then a triple jump and land it on a single blade, but are incapable of doing one spin, on two feet, without falling?
Riyan: What can I say, I’m gifted.
(they laugh and continue to dance)
Riyan: Why did your mom send you here?
Adam: Because I got into some trouble, you know that.
Riyan: But what I don’t know is what you did.
Adam: Nothing. I was hanging out with this group of people that caused a lot of trouble. They decided to break into the school one night to steal something. Well, I tried to stop them but got caught breaking into the school.
Riyan: And your parents didn’t believe you?
Adam: They did, but I think they thought that I was going to get into more trouble if I stayed so they sent me to live with you.
Riyan: Hey, when you go back we won’t fall out of touch again will we?
Adam: Never, from now on, we’ll always be friends.
Riyan: Even if I hit you again?
Adam: Yeah, even if you hit me again-- you aren’t planning to are you? I’m afraid of what you could do to me now that you’re older.
Riyan: No, not yet, but I might if you do anything stupid.
Adam: Which might be?
Riyan: Spinning me again.
Adam: Oh, like this?
(he spins her around)
Riyan: Something like that.
(she hits him on the arm)
Adam: Hey!
Riyan: I gave you fair warning
(they continue to dance. Riyan rests her head on his shoulder as they dance and a smile spreads across her face, same with Adam)
(shows clips of them spending time together)
Clip #1:
They’re at a bowling ally. Riyan keeps getting gutter balls while Adam is getting strikes. Adam gives her some pointers and when Riyan goes again she knocks down a pin. She throws up her arms in triumph and Adam twirls her around.
Clip #2:
They’re at the beach walking in the waves. Adam throws a scoop of water at Riyan, when she’s done getting over the shock she picks up some sand, however, he picks her up and gives her a piggy back ride. She smooches the sand into his hair and he spins around. They’re laughing the whole time.
Clip #3:
They’re in the mall and they walk into a photo booth and series of flashes go off. You see a series of five pictures of them.
Picture one: funny face
Picture two: another funny face
Picture three: Adam is smiling at the camera and Riyan is looking at Adam
Picture four: Riyan is looking at the camera and Adam is looking at Riyan
Picture five: they’re looking at each other
Clip #4:
They were watching a movie but fell asleep. Riyan wakes up and moves closer to Adam and then goes back to sleep. A few minutes later Adam wakes up. He watches Riyan for a moment and then wraps an arm around her and goes back to sleep.
Scene 27
(cuts to Riyan helping Adam pack up all of his things)
Riyan (as she fold his clothes and puts them into his suite case): I can’t believe you’re leaving. It doesn’t seem like it’s been nine months.
(Adam is throwing more of his cloths into his suite case, Riyan takes them out and folds them)
Adam: Who would have thought that this is how it’s ending.
Riyan: What do you mean?
Adam: Us friends and not wanting to say good-bye, well, for me anyway.
Riyan: Me too.
(silence)
Riyan: I can’t believe you’re leaving me right at the start of summer. Who am I going to talk to when my mom and I are fighting?
Adam: Still haven’t made up about the dancing thing?
Riyan: No, and we probably won’t for awhile.
Adam: Why do you say that?
Riyan: Because we are the two most stubborn people in the world, neither of us is willing to say I’m sorry.
Adam: You never did change.
Riyan: You’re just figuring this out?
Adam (ignoring the comment): Don’t forget, you still have Lynn.
Riyan: Yeah, but she’s always on the phone with in annoyed voice Spencer. If I had known that her having a boyfriend I would have never have let them go to the wedding together. This is all you’re fault.
Adam: My fault? How is this my fault?
Riyan: He’s your friend!
Adam: Well she’s your friend!
(more silence)
(Adam gets something out of his back pocket)
Adam: Here.
(hands Riyan a woven bracelet)
Adam: Someone was selling it on the streets when we ditched school that day. I meant to give it to you as a Christmas present but forgot about it.
Riyan (as she looks at the bracelet): I love it. Help me put it on?
(he ties it on her wrist)
(he zips up his suite case)
Adam (as he looks around the room): Well I think that’s it.
Riyan: I’m really going to miss you.
Adam: Me too. And hey, if you ever need me I’m only a plane ride away…. Oh, I forget something.
(reaches into his laptop carrying case and hands her a plane ticket. Riyan reads it)
Riyan (excitedly): Really? For the whole summer?
Adam: Yeah, just like the old times, you and me in Hawaii.
Riyan: Thank you!
Adam: You leave in two weeks so I’ll be there to pick you up at the airport.
Riyan: Your telescope.
Adam: What about it?
Riyan: You forgot it.
Adam: No I didn’t, I purposely left it.
Riyan: Why?
Adam: Well know I have a reason to come back.
Meg (form downstairs): Adam! You and Todd had better go or you’re going to miss your flight.
Adam (To Meg): Coming! (to Riyan) Bye Ry.
Riyan: Bye Adam.
(uncomfortably stand in front of each other and then hug. Smiles come across their faces without the other one knowing)
Adam (pulling away): Bye.
Riyan: And you don’t need a reason.
Adam: To what?
Riyan: To come back.
(he grabs his suite case and heads downstairs. Riyan sits on the bed and looks at the door)
(hear a door close and a car pull out of the drive way)
Riyan (sadly): Bye. I miss you already.
Scene 28
(cuts to later that day. Riyan is sitting out on her deck looking at he telescope. Out walks Lynn)
Lynn: Where were you? I called your cell like seventy times.
Riyan: I’ve been right here, all day.
Lynn: Why?
(she sits down across from Riyan)
Riyan: I don’t know. (hits head on table) I didn’t miss Adam half as much as I do now when we first said good-bye, and I’m going to see him in two weeks! It makes no sense. (groans)
Lynn: Actually, it makes perfect sense.
Riyan: How?
Lynn: Well, when you were five you didn’t love him.
Riyan: You’re kidding me right? Lynn, I’m going to say this slowly so you remember it. I. Don’t. Love. Adam.
Lynn: And I’m going to say this slowly. Why. Won’t. You. Admit. It?
Riyan: Because there’s nothing to admit!
Lynn: Riyan! Stop being so stubborn for once in your life and look at what’s right in front of you.
Riyan (as she gets up): I have to get ready for practice.
(she starts to walk to her room)
Lynn: Ya know, true love can’t be found where it truly doesn’t exists, nor can it be hidden where it truly does. Do you know who said that?
Riyan: No, but I have a feeling you’re going to tell me.
Lynn: Actually, I was hoping you would. But my point is that you and Adam love each other, and no matter how long you avoid your true feelings you won’t be able to hide them forever. You and Adam belong together, you complete one another.
Riyan: Really.
Lynn: Where you’re stubborn, which you are at about everything, he’s flexible, and where you’re weak he’s strong.
Riyan: I have to go.
Lynn: At least think about what I said.
(Riyan goes into her room and shuts the door)
Scene 29
(cuts to Riyan and skating practice)
Grandpa (shouting at Riyan): Hold it longer!
(Riyan does a jump and falls)
Grandpa: Ry, come here.
(Riyan skates over to him)
Grandpa: What’s wrong?
Riyan: Nothing, I’m just having an off day, that’s all.
Grandpa: Sweetie, I’m old not stupid. Now tell me what’s wrong.
Riyan: I don’t know. I thought I had everything figured out, but now… now I’m just confused
Grandpa: About what?
Riyan: Love. When did you know that grandma was the only one for you?
Grandpa: When I realized that I couldn’t live with out her.
Riyan: Which was…?
Grandpa: Your grandma and I hated each other when we first meet, but after we got to know each other we became friends, then fell in love, but of course, being the suborn person that she was, which is where you get it from, she didn’t say anything to me.
Riyan: Well why didn’t you say anything?
Grandpa: Cause I was afraid of what she’d do to me. Your grandma has a mean left hook.
Riyan (laughing): So what did you do?
Grandpa: When her family moved off of our ranch I realized that I didn’t care if she gave me a black eye as long as she new how I felt. So I ran after her. We where married a month later.
Riyan: I think I love Adam.
Grandpa: I know, I saw you two dancing at Jack’s wedding.
Riyan: But I don’t know what to do.
Grandpa: You use that ticket he got you and go tell him.
Riyan: What if I can’t?
Grandpa: Then you risk losing him. Could you live with that?
Riyan: No.
Grandpa: Then tell him.
Riyan: Bye Grandpa, love you.
(she kisses him on the cheek)
Grandpa: Love you too, have a fun time in Hawaii.
Riyan (as she skates off of the rink): I will!
Scene 30
(cuts to Riyan getting off the plane in Hawaii)
Adam: Riyan! Over here!
(Riyan sees Adam waving at her. She runs into his arms)
Adam (hugging Riyan): I missed you too.
Riyan (quietly): You have no idea.
Adam: What was that?
Riyan: Nothing.
(she lets go of him and picks up her bag)
Adam: Come on, everyone can’t wait to see you.
(they walk out of airport)
Scene 31
(cuts to Adam and Riyan walking into Adam’s house)
Group of people: Surprise!
Riyan (screaming): OHMYGOD!
Adam (laughing, to Riyan): Welcome Home.
Riyan (whispering to Adam): Who are all these people?
Adam (pointing to each person): You know Spence and my parents, Jamie and Howard, and this is Beth, Janet, and Hannah, my girlfriend.
Riyan: Girlfriend?
Adam (as he wraps an arm around Hannah’s waist): Yeah, we just got back together.
Riyan (forcing a smile): That’s so great. Thanks for coming everyone, but I’m a little tired, stupid jet jag, so I’m just going to go unpack and then go to sleep.
Jamie: Your room’s the last one on the right.
(Riyan grabs her suite case and walks down the hall to her room. Once she shuts to door she calls
Lynn)
Lynn (tiredly): This had better be good Ry.
Riyan: How’d you know it was me?
Lynn: I’m a psychic, and then there’s the fact that not many people call me at midnight. So what did you need?
Riyan: How about a machete.
Lynn (suspiciously): Why?
Riyan: It’s not important, I just want to attack Hannah with it.
Lynn: Hannah?
Riyan: His girlfriend!
Lynn: Adam?
Riyan: No Lynn, Spencer, of course Adam!
Lynn: Spencer had better not have a girlfriend !
Riyan: FOCUSE LYNN!
Lynn: Wait a minute, does this mean you like him?
Riyan: I don’t like him.
Lynn: Then why do you want to attack Hannah?
Riyan: Because…because I love him.
Lynn: FINALLY! God, I thought you’d never come to your senses.
Riyan: But it doesn’t matter, he’s taken…
(she opens the door a crack and looks out into the living room and sees Adam and Hannah watching TV)
Riyan: By that stupid bimbo slut…
Lynn: So, all’s fair in love and war.
Riyan: I’m not going to try and steal him away from her, that never works. It’s hopeless, there’s nothing I can do.
Lynn: Well there is one thing….
Riyan: What?
Lynn: You could just tell him how you feel.
Riyan; And humiliate myself in front of everyone? I don’t think so. Maybe I should just come home.
Lynn: No, you stay there, things change, who knows, they could be broken up by tomorrow.
Riyan: I highly doubt it, but thanks for you’re optimism.
Lynn: No problem, but it’ll cost you fifteen bucks.
Riyan: Good-night Lynn.
Lynn: Night Ry.
(she hangs up the phone and walks out to her balcony. She looks out over the yard at the beach and then looks at the front porch and sees Adam and Hannah kissing)
Riyan (as she hits her head on the railing): Stupid stupid stupid.
Scene 32
(cuts to Riyan walking up. She smells something in the air so she gets out of bed and walks into the kitchen where she sees Adam and sits down at the counter. Adam sets down a bowl of sliced pineapple and a plate of fried Hawaiian bread in front of her)
(Riyan looks at it then smiles at Adam)
Adam: You said it was what you missed most.
(Riyan takes a bite of each)
Riyan: Just as I remember it.
Adam: Glad you like it, and I have one more surprise for you.
Riyan: What?
(she takes another bite of food as Adam disappears behind the counter and reappears grinning and carrying a surf board)
Riyan: No.
Adam (nodding head): Yes.
Scene 33
(cuts to Adam teaching Riyan how to surf)
(Riyan stands up of the surf board but then falls back into the water. During this time Adam is laughingg and Hannah, Janet, and Beth are watching them)
Beth (to Hannah): Aren’t you the least bit worried that he’s going to fall for her?
Janet: I sure would be.
Hannah: But in order for him to be with her, he’d have to leave me, and who would want to do that? Plus, they hate each other.
(hear Adam and Riyan laughing)
Spencer (who just walks up, to Hannah): Really? Cause to me it looks like they really like each other, and I mean really like. Tell me Hannah, why doesn’t he act that way around you?
Hannah: You’re just pissed because you’re girlfriend isn’t here.
Spencer: Well at least my girlfriend truly likes me and isn’t dating me to make another person jealous,
Hannah: You’re a jackass.
Spencer: And you’re a conceded bitch.
(he walks away leaving the three in shock)
(hear Adam and Riyan laughing)
Scene 34
(cuts to Riyan sneaking out of the house at night and running down to the beach. She unfolds a blanket she was caring and sets it on the ground and then she lays down on it and looks up at the stars)
Adam: What ya looking at?
Riyan (startled): What are you doing here?
Adam: I was on the deck and I say you sneak out, so I followed you.
Riyan: Stalker.
Adam: More of just a curiosity. So what are you looking at?
Riyan: The stars. Wanna sit?
Adam: Sure.
(he lays down next to Riyan)
Adam: So why--
Riyan: Shhhh.
Adam: What--
Riyan: Shhh.
(he looks over at her and sees that her eyes are closed)
Adam (in a whisper): What are you doing?
Riyan: Trying to remember the sound of the ocean.
Adam: But you live right by it in Seattle.
Riyan: It’s not the same. Now shhhh.
(they look at the stars in silence for awhile)
Adam: So why were you out here in the middle of the night?
Riyan: I want to remember it all before I go home on Saturday.
Adam: This Saturday? But that’s only two days away!
Riyan: I know, but school starts on Tuesday.
Adam: I can’t believe your leaving already.
Riyan (sitting up): Well maybe if you hadn’t spent do much time with your girlfriend then we would have been able to have more time together.
Adam (sitting up): What’s that supposed to mean? What do you have against her?
Riyan (standing up): Nothing, absolutely nothing. Don’t forget the blanket when you leave.
(she walks off)
Adam: Ry! Ry come back!
(she continues to walk back to the house)
Scene 35
(cuts to Riyan packing the next day. Adam walks in)
Adam: Hey.
Riyan (continues to pack): Hey.
Adam: I have an idea. There’s this end of summer party tonight down at the beach and I was wondering if you would like to go with me?
Riyan: Hannah doesn’t mind?
Adam: I don’t care if she does. You’re my friend and it’s your last day here. She’ll understand that I want to spend it with you. Plus she knows we’re just friends.
Riyan: I’d love to but--
Adam: Cool, we’ll leave at about seven.
Riyan: But I’m going with Spencer.
Adam: Oh, um, never--never mind then, I’ll just go with Hannah.
Riyan: Well I’d better get back to packing.
Adam: Kay.
(he walks out of the room while Riyan continues to pack)
Scene 36
(cut to Spencer coming into Adam’s house later that night to pick up Riyan)
Spencer: Hey Adam, is Ry ready?
Adam: How could you do that?
Spencer: Do what?
Adam: Go on a date with Riyan!!
Spencer: A date? You’re kidding me right? Remember this girl who lives in Seattle, friends with Riyan, name is Lynn, my girlfriend. Ry and I are just going as friends.
Adam: Oh, never mind then.
(Adam turns to walk to his room, Spencer follows)
Spencer: Why do you care so much? The last time I checked you also had a girlfriend, named Hannah.
(Riyan walks into Adam’s room)
Riyan (to Spencer): I thought I heard you. Ready?
Spencer: Yeah, lets go.
Riyan (to Adam): See ya there.
Scene 37
(cuts to the beach party. Adam is watching Riyan and Spencer while Hannah sits right next to him, not having a good time)
Hannah: Come on Adam, lets dance.
Adam: I don’t feel like dancing right now.
(sees Riyan and Spencer walk out to the dance floor and start dancing)
Adam: Now I do.
(They walk out to dance floor and start to dance floor)
(after the four dance for a while a slow song starts. Hannah starts to put her arms around Adam, but he back away)
Adam: Actually I was wondering if Ry would like to dance?
Riyan: Sure.
(Hannah walk off angrily, Spencer follows smiling)
(Adam and Riyan begin to dance)
Adam: Having fun?
Riyan: Tons. Hey, I’m sorry I stormed off last night. I was just mad about leaving and I took it out on you…and Hannah.
Adam: I understand.
(they dance in silence for awhile)
Adam: Can I ask you something?
Riyan: What?
Adam: Why do you hate Hannah?
Riyan: I hate her because she’s a PREP and only thinks of herself.
Adam (getting mad): You don’t even know her!
Riyan (starting to shout): I have other reasons too!
Hannah (to Beth and Janet): This is getting good.
Spencer (who over heard Hannah): Shut up!
Adam: Like what? Just tell me!
Riyan: I can’t!
Adam (calmly): Why can’t you just say what you really want to?
Riyan: ‘Cause I could you lose you forever.
Adam: No you won’t, we’re friends Ry, and we always will be.
Riyan: That’s the problem!
Adam: That we’re friends?
Riyan: Yes!! I’m jealous Adam!. I hate seeing you with Hannah, I’d to hate see you with any girl that wasn't me! I'm in a tug-a-war between being happy that we're friends and crying in dismay because I know that that's all we're ever gonna be. I’m in love with you Adam. Head-over-heels in love, and I always will be. And I can’t believe that I ever thought that you could be in love with me too.
(the music stops)
Riyan: I’d better go.
(she runs towards the house)
Scene 38
(cuts to Adam waking up the next day. He looks at his clock and jumps out of bed and runs down the hall to Riyan’s room. It’s completely empty, so he runs to the kitchen where he finds Jamie eating breakfast)
Adam: Mom, where’s Riyan?
Jamie: She left about half an hour ago.
Adam (running back to his room): Why didn’t anyone wake me?
Jamie: She didn’t want to bother you.
(he slams his door closed)
Jamie: Is everything okay?
(Adam comes out of his room dressed)
Adam: She has something of mine.
Jaime: What?
Adam: My heart. I’ll be back in awhile.
Jamie: Where are you going?
Adam (as he runs out of the house): The airport!
Scene 39
(cuts to Riyan at check point in the airport)
Security Guard: Your ticket please… Miss?
Riyan (coming back from her thoughts): Sorry.
(she hands him her ticket. The security guard looks at it and gives it back to her)
Riyan: Thanks.
(cuts to Adam running through the airport trying to find Riyan. He sees her right past security check point)
Adam (shouting): Riyan! Riyan over here!
(he tries to go through check point but the security guard stops him)
Security guard: Sorry but you can’t go though without a ticket.
Adam: But I need to talk to that girl.
(he points to Riyan)
Guard: I’m sorry, airport rules.
Adam: Riyan!
Guard: If you don’t have a ticket you need to leave.
Adam: Riyan! Riyan Lawrence turn around!
(she still doesn’t hear him)
Guard: If you don’t leave now I’m going to have to call the police.
Adam: Alright, I’m leaving!
(shows a series of clips of Riyan and Adam)
Clip #1:
Riyan is getting on the plane and sits down in her seat and looks out the window and starts to cry.
Clip #2:
Adam is walking back to his car where Spencer is waiting for him. Adam shakes his head “no.” They get into the car and drive away from the airport.
Clip #3:
Riyan is getting off of the plane. She walks through the airport and when she reaches Lynn she hugs her and begins to cry again. They walk out of the airport to Lynn’s car.
Clip #4:
Adam is sitting in the room that Riyan was staying in just looking around.
Clip #5:
Riyan is walking though the room that Adam had stayed in and then walks out on the deck and looks though the telescope.
Scene 40
(Adam is sitting on the beach looking at the stars with Spencer)
Adam: I broke up with Hannah to be with Riyan, but I never got the chance to tell her.
Spencer: Then call her.
Adam: I can’t talk to her, not after the way I’ve acted this summer and especially other night. I was so stupid! She told me she loved me and I just stood there like a complete idiot. What I should have done was taken her in my arms and never have let her go. But now it’s too late, I blew my only chance with the girl of me dreams.
Spencer: If you feel that way about her go get on a plane and tell her.
Adam: I can’t, besides, she wouldn’t even listen to me.
Scene 41
(five months later, in Seattle. Riyan is sitting in a desk finishing a test, when she’s done she takes it up to the teacher’s desk and sits back down)
Mrs. Harly: Have a wonderful winter break and I hope to see you all without casts when we get back.
(bell rings and class leaves)
Mrs. Harly (to Riyan): Could I have a minute Riyan?
Riyan: Sure.
Mrs. Harly: I just finished reading you’re short story and I loved it. Have you ever considered becoming a writer?
Riyan: Not really.
Mrs. Harly: Well you have a talent and I would encourage you to follow through with it.
Riyan: Um, sure…
Mrs. Harly: How did you come up with the idea?
Riyan: It just popped into my head
Mrs. Harly: I was surprised though.
Riyan: About what?
Mrs. Harly: That Samantha and Ian didn’t end up together.
Riyan: It’s just how it worked out. In the end they weren’t meant to be together.
Mrs. Harly: Well it was good nonetheless. In fact, I would like to enter it in a national writing contest. The winner gets a thousand dollar scholarship.
Riyan: Sure, but could I take it home and maybe fix a few things?
Mrs. Harly: Sure, just bring it back on the first day of school.
Riyan: Will do, bye Mrs. Harly. Have a nice Christmas.
Mrs. Harly: You too Riyan.
(Riyan leaves the class room and walks to her locker where Lynn is)
Lynn: So what did Mrs. Harly want to talk about?
Riyan: Apparently I’m a talented writer, she wants me to submit my story into this national writing contest.
Lynn: That’s awesome! Why aren’t you more excited?
Riyan: Because it forces me to think of Adam, something that I’ve tried not to do for the past five months.
Lynn: Then why’d you write it?
Riyan: To forget about last year, to forget about him.
(she slams the locker shut)
Riyan: See you at lunch.
Scene 42
(cuts to Adam sitting at the desk in his room, his homework is out but he’s looking at a picture of him and Riyan at the wedding)
(in walks Spencer)
Spencer: Let it go, it’s been five months.
Adam: That’s the night I fell in love with her.
(shows the picture to Spencer)
Adam: We were dancing and I spun her around and she fell into me, and I just knew. I was so stupid. All the signs were there, yet I missed every single one of them.
Spencer (grabbing Adam’s coat): Get up.
Adam (confused): What?
Spencer (throws Adam his coat): I have to take you somewhere.
(they walk through the house)
Adam: Where?
Spencer: Seattle.
Scene 43
(cuts to Riyan practicing on the ice. She does a layback spin, a double axel, a combination, a spiral, and another double axel)
Grandpa: Good Ry. That’s enough for today. I’ll see you tomorrow.
Riyan: Bye Grandpa. I think I’ll stay here and practice a little more.
Grandpa: Just don’t kill yourself.
Riyan: Don’t worry, Lynn’s watching so she can call nine-one-one if necessary.
(Grandpa leaves and Riyan continues to practice. Then Adam appears with Spencer)
Adam (to Spencer): I can’t do this. She hates me Spence!
Spencer: No she doesn’t, she’s just heartbroken and you’re the only one that can fix it.
(Adam is still unsure)
Spencer: I see this as you having two choices. One, you go back to Hawaii and only imagine what could have been with you and Riyan, or two, which is my personal favorite, you go and tell her and stop wondering. What’s it gonna be?
(Adam watches Riyan skate for a minute)
Adam: Get me a pair of skates.
(Spencer hands him a pair)
Spencer: Here, Lynn already got them for you.
(a song starts playing over the loud speakers which makes Riyan stop skating. Then she sees Adam skating towards her)
Riyan: What are you doing here?
Adam: I came to get my telescope.
Riyan: Well you know where it is, you don’t need my help.
Adam: Actually I thought you needed me, and as I said, I’m only a plane ride away.
Riyan: Well you wasted your time, I don’t need you.
(Riyan starts to skate away)
Adam: But I need you.
(she skates back to him)
Riyan: No you don’t, you only think you do. What you feel for me is not real Adam, it’s just your mind playing tricks.
Adam: You’re wrong, I need you and only you. And what I feel for you is not my mind playing tricks, it’s my heart telling me what I’ve known for a long time.
Riyan (crossing her arms): Then why didn’t you chase after me? Why didn’t you try to stop me from getting on the plane?
Adam: I did! I got to the airport as fast as I could. I called after you but you never turned around. Hell, I almost got arrested because I tried to get through check point without a ticket to get to you. I’m in love with you Riyan, I have been for awhile. And I know we’re meant to be together.
Riyan: I'm sorry, but I don't believe you. I don't think we're meant to be together.
Adam: I love you Riyan, probably since i was five years old, i just never realized it. I love they way you try to please everyone but still have your own opinions, and the way you act as if you don't need anyone's help when you really do. But most of all...I love that you know me better than anyone else, probably even me. And as for us being meant for each other, just look in the telescope. Our story is just like the god and goddess, our parents were Zeus, us having to live together for a year was being chained together for a thousand years, and now we’re falling in love, just like the story.
Riyan: But it’s a story, it’s not real, none of it is.
(Adam skates closer to Riyan and cups her face in his hands)
Adam: Well now it is.
(he kisses her)
Riyan: But we’re not meant to be together, no matter what anyone says, we don’t fit.
Adam: Really? Cause the way I see it, we're not meant for anyone else. I love you Riyan. But if you don’t love me I’ll leave.
(he starts to skate off the ice)
Riyan: Wait!
(he skates back to her)
Riyan: What do you want from me Adam? I already went through this five months ago and it was hell. I’d rather not do it again unless you love me from the bottom of your heart. And it has to be the kind of love that’s supposed to last a lifetime, the kind where you’d do anything to save it.
Adam: It is. Riyan, you are the only one for me. I could look for a thousand years and never be as in love as I am with you.
Riyan: What about Hannah?
Adam: Hannah who? I don’t know any Hannah’s.
(Riyan looks around the rink as she thinks, she’s crying)
Adam: Riyan?
Riyan (looks at Adam): I love you too.
(she jumps into his arms and they kiss again)
Riyan: So very much.
(shows Lynn and Spencer sitting in the bleachers watching)
Spencer: Awesome plan.
(he puts an arm around Lynn)
Lynn (smiling): I knew it would work.
(goes back to Riyan and Adam, who are still kissing)
Riyan (voice): I rewrote the ending to my story and ended up winning. As it turns out, Ian and Sam did belong with each other. The four of us finished high school, Spencer and Adam in Hawaii and Lynn and I in Seattle, then we all went to Brown University. We graduate in four days, and lets just say that in the near future you'll be hearing Adam and I each say “I do.”
Lucus on “One Tree Hill” was right,“There are six billion people in the world, six billion people… and sometimes… all you need is one.” And every once in awhile they can be right in front of you….mine sure was.
