The Escape

Chapter 3

Salley could only think of one thing. She didn’t want to be stuck out here too much longer in such a dangerous place.

The canoe was quickly flung on her back, and she began to run.

Stumbling over the roots of plants and trees, she continued to run, somehow managing to keep a steady footing in the sinking bog.

She thought of it, but no, it couldn’t be true; her island, sinking away? Yes, it was true; pretty soon, all that would be left might be the top of her tree, but then, even that might vanish. This world had taken too much from her, first her mother, and now, her only place to go and be alone. She had made up her mind; she would never return.

Salley came to the water’s edge, dropped down the canoe, and hopped in.

Grabbing a nearby stick which looked like a branch, she pushed herself and the canoe off the bank into the churning water. Salley chose to head the opposite direction, away from her family, away from her friends, and away from her previous life.

She thought too use the stick as a paddle. It was both firm and thick, perfect for steering.

Salley looked around. The island was almost gone, and the canoe was quickly filling up with the rain water.

She began scooping it up with her hands and tossing it over the side.

Salley began to grow weary of this task and closed her eyes.

When she opened her eyes again, the rain had stopped, and she was floating down the river more rapidly because of the rain abundance.

She did not recognize where she was and heard a rumbling sound, her stomach. She realized that she had not eaten now for almost two days!

She needed to find a reliable food source. She reached into her pocket to find that her half-full water bottle was gone.

Salley realized that she must have left it back on the island. How careless could she be?

Anyway, it was gone now, and there was no need to dwell on it. A new task lay before her: To find a source of food and water, a home, a home, and a new identity; and she had to find them FAST.
