Fine Line readers, tell me what you want!
I have discovered Lulu dot com. And it's magnificent.
Buuut after formatting Fine Line to fit one of their page size requirements- a 6 by 9 inch book- it's too long to submit the whole thing to Lulu. And that was BEFORE I did funny things with the text (like personalize the "handwriting"). So now you're probably thinking, What? How can it be too long? Well, Lulu has a page limit of 740 pages... and Fine Line went over it... and then they made me add a Table of Contents and a Title Page and a Copyright Page, plus the dedication/pronunciation guide page.
Long story short: I'm splitting it.
I already split one book off from the others- the last chapter is "Let's make a pact!"- and it's called Fine Line: At the Swing Set. In my opinion, it looks really nice and fun. 237 pages. But that's beside the point- how do YOU want the rest of the story? (You guys are the reason this story survived, so I care a lot about what you think.)
These are some options I've thought out, but if you have any suggestions, I'll be glad to hear them.
Option One: Split it into three parts.
This would definitely be the easiest to do, plus it would mean I wouldn't have to cut anything. The pastness and the futureness would stay intact. :) The books would be anywhere between $12-14 USD. This is what the split would look like:
Part One: At the Swing Set would cover their seventh grade year and the summer after seventh grade (last chapter would be where they signed the Pact).
Part Two: Mind Games would cover eighth grade and the following summer (last chapter would be Keiran and Caomhe's first date).
Part Three (er... haven't thought of a subtitle yet) would cover ninth grade and the epilogue.
Look how easy that is. As natural as breathing. Yes, this is my favorite option.
Option Two: Split it into two parts
This split would be a lot more awkward. I can still change where I put the split, but here are some ideas:
-Keep it split after the Pact is signed and have the second book be ALL FILLED WITH LOVE.
-Split it after the middle school dance chapters (Just Go for It). The first book would have a terribly dramatic ending, but the second book would more than make up for it. (In which case I would probably get rid of the futureness and pastness to keep the dramatic tension)
-Split it somewhere else.
Option Three: Cut out the pastness and futureness so you can make it under the page limit and have it be ONE MASSIVE BOOK.
Why I don't like this option:
1) The book would be expensive.
2) Who didn't like the pastness and futureness?!
3) The book would be HUUUUUUUGE.
4) I would probably also have to get rid of the cool formatting stuff I did to the "handwriting". Not fair.
Why this option would be beneficial (just to be fair):
1) You have the whole story as it was meant to be read.
2) Good for long trips...
I'm open to suggestions!
If all goes well, you can expect to see some form of Fine Line out between December and January. I'm aiming for December 2 because that's its third birthday. Edits will be coming in slowly. :)
Also, I should give you a head's up... I changed a lot of technical stuff. Like, there isn't a set location anymore. Fine Line could be taking place in Narnia for all we know. Also, I pushed it back a few years so the story starts in 2003.
Have an assortment of Halloween treats.
