Diploma in hand, cap on his head;

how was he to know in a month he'd be dead?

Family's so proud, they know he did right;

how were they to know for this he'd give his life?

Gun in hand, doesn't know how to shoot;

better shape up before they give him the boot.

Sergeant's so mad, all he does is yell;

just out of high school and already in Hell.

Hat in hand, at the end of the day;

finally made it, though for this he will pay.

Weapons in hand, tools of destruction;

so hectic out here, barely time to function.

Death in hand, and it's his turn to deal;

so scared and lost, but his feelings he'll conceal.

Hand in hand, with another man too;

the boys back home wouldn't get what he's gone through.

Blood on his hands, it's his own this time;

looks like he's finally crossed that last thin line.

Heads in hands, as they lay him to rest;

Words can't describe this hero, Man at his best.
