We used to wait for the bus together,
at that one stop between our apartments.
It was out of the way for both of us, but we never told.

Usually it was just the two of us, but sometimes
an old lady or a young businessman
would join us under the shelter.

We told jokes and stories, and
you’d always test out your pickup lines on me;
I told you which were best and
you would smile like you knew a secret.

My favorites were the corny ones,
the ones that made me laugh just because
they were so bad.

It turned out you knew me too well,
and I guess you could say that you turned against me,
almost that you cheated,
but I guess it was fair in the end.

One rainy Wednesday morning while
we sat on the bench under the overhang,
you tossed out a line, the one you knew
would get me.

It did, and even though the line was silly,
the look in your eyes was all seriousness
and doubt didn’t stand a chance
against your kiss.
