Prologue

John

I was born Jonathan Maxwell in New York City in 2024. My life in America didn’t last long because my parents could see that the government was becoming corrupt. In 2027, my family left America and moved to Berlin, Germany. Dictators also began to come to power in France and England in the late 2030s.

My life was shattered when the French government began doing raids looking for “terrorists.” Most of the people they accused were nothing short as loyal to the government. The German government did not stop the French when they began executing people in their homes because they did not want to start a war. They just accepted that as long as they did not oppose the French, they would be safe from being taken over.

I was twelve when my family was suspected for no reason. The French just showed up and murdered my family. After that, I went to live in an orphanage and lived there until I was 18. That was when I joined the German army to help defend my country.

While in Russia one time, I met Sasha. From the moment I laid eyes on her, I was in love. Her hair was long and dark brown. Her blue eyes were like reflecting pools that sparkled in the sunlight. Like most Russians, her skin was fairly pale, but she had a light tan. We spent the next few months together.

The war started soon after so I had to leave her. What made leaving her hardest was that we had just learned that she was pregnant. For the past several years, the only time I’ve seen my son, Joseph, were the pictures Sasha sent with her letters. Hopefully the war will end soon and I will be able to spend my life peacefully with her.
