we'll make some chicken soup but

abandon it on the stove for a frozen reece's cup

balance it on our lips as we

sunbathe sprawled on the porch till

our limbs are on fire and

even then some.

our cheeks will sunstain pink

but smile, sunshine, we've got nine weeks

let's get dressed up- or down, more like

into painstained denim, pockets frayed, exactly the way i like it

tanktops covered in polka dots and popsicle stains

your skin smells like grass and your hair

banana boat oil (since when did you burn black?)

and dangle silver streams of jewelry till it hangs above

your heart, like a ticktock

the way it swings.

sit until we're summerfied and finally

gasp for air conditioning so we'll slide into your leather seats

even though the sunburn screams

and ride along singing to the songs we've always loved to sing

hair feet out the window, hands in motions just created

(or was it last week? who knows, who cares?) never getting old

suddenly we're five again with a liscence to play, liscense to drive

so swerve a little more than neccasary on that black asphalt-

practically simmering

(need to run across it, soles on fire but flipflops too confining)

until the sun sets before your windsheild

so drag on more denim and slip on a black band tee

feel the way it's faded like the legend branded on your chest

muss your hair as you mouth the words and hit the dance floor, darling

drink up the colorful cups that man will hand you

punch his number in and learn his name

(maybe)

then dissapear like a summer cinderella because it's midnight and i'm

with the girls.

turn up the volume, sunshine, you know i love this song.
