Jennifer looked down at her feet apprehensively, fingering a piece of jewelry in her coat pocket. She was sitting on a bench at the corner of Main Street and Juniper, and it looked as if she was waiting, a little jumpily, for someone to arrive.

Daniel, having been her steady boyfriend for many months, was a little uneasy when he got the call from his beloved saying to meet her down on Main Street, and that they have to “talk.” He’d heard the stories of “having to talk” be the dreadful last words of relationships… He did, however, have another idea as to what this was all about.

Jennifer was nervous for a different reason, because in full truth, she had called Daniel to tell him to meet her there, so she could surprise him with a dinner date at his favorite Italian eatery, and so she could give him the thing residing in her pocket, as a six-month anniversary present.

Daniel looked around, walking up Juniper Street, trying to get a glimpse of the beautiful girl he was to meet at the intersection. As soon as he came up the street, his heart raced as he saw her there, her hair flowing back in the gentle breeze that ran through the city. He loved how even though they had been together for half a year, his pulse still sped every time he saw Jennifer.

The girl’s face lit up in a wide smile as soon as she saw Daniel coming. Jennifer sprung out of her seat and embraced tightly Daniel with her long, lanky arms. She kissed him on the cheek softly, and whispered a “Hello, Love.”

Daniel felt amazing whenever he was in her arms. Sensitive and caring, he was a true romantic. He touched Jennifer’s lips lightly with his own and sat down on the bench she had been sitting on while waiting. Daniel motioned for his girl to sit next to him, and she did. He put his arm behind Jennifer’s neck and cupped her shoulder in his palm.

Jennifer spoke again. “I called… I called for you to meet me here, so I could do something special for you.” She grinned and licked her bottom lip. “I’m taking you somewhere.”

Daniel arched his right eyebrow halfway up his forehead playfully. “Oh yeah?” he said, teasing her a bit. “You want to do something special for me?” He said this in a slight New York accent and the words “want to” merged into the single “woanna.”

“I was thinking we could do something for our half-year.” She was talking about the anniversary.

Daniel slapped his right hand to his forehead comically. He put his hand down in his lap, looked at it in shame, made a frustrated fist out of it, and said, “Aw, baby, I forgot all about it…” His words trailed off.

“You… you what?” Jennifer asked softly. She was shocked. It wouldn’t be like him, to forget about such a big deal, like this. He was usually so thoughtful.

Daniel looked up from his lap and gazed into Jennifer’s face ruefully. But the remorse vanished from his eyes a few seconds later, as he beamed, and liveliness crept back into his face. His eyebrow was back to creeping up his forehead. He smirked and said, “You really fell for that, now?” As sensitive as Daniel was to other people’s (especially Jennifer’s) feelings, he was still quite the jokester. “Of course I remembered!”

Jennifer’s eyes widened, showing her sapphire-blue irises. “What did you do that for?” she asked, pouting. She plucked his arm off of her and threw it at him, turning away and going to the far side of the bench they were occupying.

“What are you getting so angry about?” he questioned. “It was just—just a little joke!”

Jennifer slowly turned back and said, smirking, “You really fell for that, now?”

Daniel relaxed, letting his shoulders down (they had crawled up his neck tensely as he’d watched Jennifer react). He squinted, then smiled, and hugged her. “I’ve got a little something for you, too,” he said. “It’s still at home, though. I was planning to try and get together with you later on tonight to give it to you.”

“Aw… You didn’t… You didn’t have to,” whispered Jennifer. Her face turned a pale red. Her temperament changed quickly, though. She turned back into the lighthearted kind of girl that she was and said, “Now, what do you say we get out of here, and I give you what I was talking about?” She stood up and took Daniel’s hand. Her other hand was in her pocket, and it was still toying with that piece of jewelry.
