Dragon Soul
Prologue: Sisters of Blood
Rain pelted the roof of the small cottage as a woman’s cries echoed through the night. Lighting struck through the sky at the God’s command as our story unfolds. The screams of pain rang true and clear as the reached a climax. Through the trees a gentle wind, out of place amongst its stormy sisters, glided in the night.
Where am I?
It continued, following the screams into the cottage where a woman struggled to give birth to her child. Nervous midwives gathered around her, sweat brimming on their foreheads as the woman panted and begged them to help. The storm was unsettling as this was a magic night, and the stories of changelings and evil spirits plagued their thoughts. This child refused to be born, an omen of chaos to the small minded folk. The breeze, which it was clearly not, paused outside the window.
The warmth of love, the strength of new life….
I hear it… I have found you…
The flutter of a heart, the joining of souls…
I have found you at last….
The woman pushed as she was told; crystals of pink and blue hovered above her belly, to stop the pain. It was as if she was meant to suffer, for they failed completely. With no warning the wind blew open the fragile door, startling the jumpy maids. A hard blast of wind blew them over and washed over the struggling woman. The crystals pulsed with light, faster and faster until the room glowed with the awesome colors, vibrating until they finally shattered with the strange power. The suffering woman noticed a warm shift in her belly before her baby girl’s head was freed. The maids trembled as the crystals showered them in glittery fragments, each twisting their fingers in the sign against evil. The woman gave one more push and became still….
The maid held the child pronouncing it a girl, but when the baby opened its eyes, she screamed and almost dropped the infant. Her eyes were that of a dragon, fierce green, the pupil nothing but a sliver of black.
This was a demon! Or worse….
The maid trembled with fear as the lifted the shoulder of the new born. It can’t be… The mark of a dragon eating its own tail blazed scarlet against pale, thin skin. No…NO! This was no ordinary child, this was the destroyer of the world, this was the one who would kill everything and everyone, leaving the earth scorched and barren. This was the Dragon Child. And she had claimed her first victim…her own mother….
As the maid trembled in unspeakable horror, with the babe in her arms, the child’s eyes stretched and grew until they looked like a normal human child’s eyes. She closed those disturbing eyes as the voice of the wind echoed through her very soul.
You are mine….I have you….
