Fatal Rejection

Chapter 1: The Beginning

“Honey, hurry up, you’re going to be late for school!”

“Coming, Dad,” seventeen-year-old Demetra Lawrence yelled as she descended the stairs. She entered the kitchen, where she found her dad reading the newspaper.

“It’s about time,” Daniel Lawrence said as he looked over the newspaper at his only child.

Demetra had always been an only child and, after the loss of her mother, her and her dad had formed a special bond that not many fathers and daughters have.

“I know, I know, but my alarm didn’t go off this morning.”

“Likely story,” he replied sarcastically, trying to give Demetra a stern look, but failing miserably.

“You really need to work on that look.” She smiled and grabbed a cereal bar out of the cupboard. “I better get going. Bye, Dad.” She kissed her dad on the cheek and started for the door.

“Bye, sweetie, have a good day,” Daniel called after her, but she had already disappeared out the door.

Demetra ran out to the driveway and quickly got into her car. My did she love her vehicle, it was a Jeep Liberty and colored a very deep blue, almost the color of her eyes. She turned the key in the ignition and the engine roared to life. After quickly backing out of their driveway, she headed towards the school. She was lucky that she didn’t live more then ten minutes away or she would be late, and she was rarely ever late.

Exactly six minutes later, Demetra was parking in the school parking lot. She opened her door and her feet quickly made contact with the pavement. She pulled out her backpack and darted towards the large building. It was four stories high, plus a basement, and made out of a peach-colored brick. The first time that she had come there in the ninth grade, she remembered that it had looked so intimidating. But now the only thing that scared her about this place, was the awful cafeteria food that she was forced to eat every day.

Once inside, she made her way through the crowded halls. After reaching her locker she glanced at her watch, 5…4…3…2…and 1. She frowned, that’s weird. We always meet at my locker at this time; I wonder what’s keeping him. Suddenly a set of hands covered her eyes.

“Guess who?” A familiar, male voice said.

Demetra smiled. “Um….Ronald McDonald.”

“Close enough,” he said before taking his hands away.

Demetra turned around and locked eyes with the most unique emerald green eyes; which could only belong to one person, her boyfriend, Gabe Mitchell. “Hey, you’re late,” she noted, pretending to pout.

Gabe glanced at his watch. “I know, sorry, I had to stop and get gas on the way here. Will you ever forgive me?”

“I’ll think about it.” She started to turn away, but Gabe spun her back around and planted a quick kiss on her lips.

Demetra just smiled and shut her locker. “Come on, or we’ll be late for class.” She locked hands with him and they quickly walked down the long hallway.

Every Friday, after school, Demetra and Gabe would go to the local coffee shop that was owned by Gabe’s aunt and uncle. It was an old house that they had bought and restored. They had turned the bottom half into the coffee shop and the top half into a small, but cozy, apartment.

Demetra and Gabe entered the shop and were immediately greeted by his aunt.

“Hello, you two, how was school?” Sarah Mitchell asked politely.

“Fine, our math teacher gave us a pop quiz,” Gabe complained.

“It wasn’t that bad, I thought the questions were fairly easy.”

“Of course you would, you’re great at school.”

“I wouldn’t say that I was ‘great’.”

“Dem, you skipped a grade, I would say that, that is pretty great.”

“Whatever,” she said and shrugged it off.

“What would you guys like?” Sarah inquired.

“The regular, please,” Gabe and Demetra said in unison.

“I think that you two are together too much,” Sarah stated and let out a small laugh. “The regular, coming up.”

“Where’s Uncle Bill?” Gabe asked as Sarah began to put together their order.

“He’s putting in new wood floors over at the church. He should be back soon though.”

Gabe merely nodded in response.

Sarah set two coffee cups on the counter in front of them before going into the back to get their food.

Demetra blew on the warm drink and took a sip. It was a French vanilla cappuccino, her favorite. Just as she had set her cup back down, she heard Gabe cry out in pain. She quickly turned to him. “What’s wrong?”

“I…burnt…my…tongue.”

She laughed. “You do that every week; I would have thought that you would have learned by now.”

He narrowed his eyes, obviously not enjoying his pain as much as she was. “I’m hurting here and you’re making fun of me.”

Demetra got off of her stool and stepped closer to him. “Oh, you poor baby, let me see,” she said, trying to stifle her laughter.

Gabe stuck his tongue out as far as he could and Demetra pretended to examine it. “Hm…it looks like a small burn right on the tip of your tongue. I would prescribe something cold and for you to blowing on your cappuccino before you drink it.”

Gabe raised his hand and made a salute to her. “Yes, ma’am.”

She laughed and put her arms around his neck. “Do you think that a kiss would make you feel better?”

“I don’t know, you could try it.”

Demetra closed the space between them and gave him a soft, but deep, kiss.

When they pulled apart, Gabe smiled. “I feel much better, thank you.”

She returned the smile. “Anytime.”

Sarah re-appeared with their food. “Here you go, enjoy.”

“Thank you,” Demetra said and sat back down on her stool.

“Thanks, Aunt Sarah.”

Sarah nodded and went to help the other customers.

Demetra looked over at Gabe as he ate. She felt herself smile again, she was so lucky to have him. “Gabe?”

He looked over at her. “Yeah?”

She paused and then just shook her head. “Never mind.”

“Oh, okay.”

She went back to eating and neither of them said another word.
