Boisterous voices
Vaulting through the halls by night,
Vacant rooms come June.

Stains upon a page,
A heritage of meanings
Lost when we are gone.

Beneath children’s feet
Sand dollars speckle the strand,
Deserted by the tide.

Feverish prayers—
Like the sea beneath the moon
We swell to the heavens.
