This is my first ever first-person view and its supposed to sound be told like a story so please tell me if something sounds weird or what-not. Enjoy!
Chapter 1
Winter was hard that year, prey was scarce and the snow deeper than a wolf was tall. We had lost two pack members to a freak snow storm and the rest of us were skin and bones. The alphas decided to put off more pups until their strength was back then to try and replace the lost members. Our pack was small; two she-wolves, one he-wolf, the alphas and me.
We were hunting, it was spring and the deer were just birthing. The he-wolf and I were sent on ambush duty. Fog drifted off the small water and gathered on the ground, muffling the beat of my paws on hard earth. A howl sounded behind me and I sped up, my tongue was rolling and the bushes whipped my hide. I didn’t care, it was time to hunt.
I skidded to a halt and gulped down the clean air. The he-wolf’s scent was caught in the wind as it ruffled my fur. I breathed deep; green grass, dirt and rotten fish that that the he-wolf had rolled in a couple days ago reached my nose.
Vibrations traveled up through my thick pads and into my body, pulling me from my thoughts. The smell of elk sweat, fear and freshly turned dirt filled my nostrils. I growled in excitement, the herd was coming.
I saw the he-wolf run from his hiding place and latch himself on the shoulder of the he-elk, his weight pulling the elk to his knees. My feet started to move without me and I soon found my jaws fastened around the thick neck of the he-elk, crushing the windpipe and cutting a large vein. Hot, sweet blood filled my mouth and spilled down onto my hide, staining my white fur red. The alphas each grabbed a leg and pulled, sending the elk crashing to the ground and causing me to almost lose my hold.
The he-elk kicked violently, catching the alpha male in the chest with a glancing blow making him stumble back in surprise. With a snarl that made me cringe, the alpha lunged, sinking his teeth into the elk’s thigh he yanked, neatly hamstringing the buck and ending the annoying kicking.
I felt the elk weakening in my jaws, his struggles to get free useless. With one last kick of his good leg he lay quiet. I dropped the head and backed away as the alphas advanced on the corpse. It may have been the first elk I had ever killed but it was not my place to eat, so I hung back waiting my turn.
The coppery smell of blood clogged the air and the ravens were already circling, waiting for a chance to feed on our kill. I growled at them, warning them to stay away. One she-raven landed at a safe distance from the pack and cocked her head at me.
“Why should we?” She squawked at me, “We don’t steal from you do we? We show you where there are dead and eat what little you leave behind.”
The alpha female raised her head from the elk, her muzzle and ruff red from blood, and glanced at the raven then at me.
“Please do not get angry with her she-raven, she is young and stupid. Her mind filled with puppy pride as this is her first elk kill.” She turned to glare at me, “Daughter apologize at once.”
I hung my head in shame and mumbled my apology. The she-raven ruffled her feathers and fixed me with a bright eye.
“You have a good hunter in this one if she can take down an elk at her young age.” She told the alpha female never taking her eye off me, “How old are you pup?”
“She has seen one winter black one.” The alpha female answered for me, licking her lips before returning to her meal.
The raven clapped her beak a couple times before taking to the skies again. I watched her wing away for two breaths length before joining the he-wolf at the elk after the alphas were done.
The he-wolf snapped at me once before allowing me to eat what was left of the elk. The sweet meat filled my aching belly and I felt a growl travel up my throat and out my jaws in frustration as I wrestled with a piece of tendon. Little did I know that it would get worse then a hunk of stubborn meat.
The grey she-wolf glared at me as I flopped down next to her, much to my confusion.
“Go shake the water off pup.” She said tartly, “And do not flop, its ungraceful and it disturbs others.”
Grinning evilly, I stood and shook, spraying water all over the she-wolf before laying back down as noble as I could.
The she-wolf yelped in surprise which quickly turned into a growl. I didn’t like that wolf, never did. She always had her nose in the air and thought herself better than everybody else. Never got her feet dirty or played, just sat there and watched us with… Oh sorry, I was rambling wasn’t I? Well thank you little one for reminding me, let’s get back to the story.
I leapt to my feet, ready to fight but the alpha male intervened with a quick nip to mine and the she-wolf’s nose. He growled once more for good measure before stalking back to his mate.
“They’re just pups; you should have let them work it out on their own Greysun.”
I froze, not believing my ears. I turned to the alpha female as her mate replied with a sigh, “I know Silverriver, but I did not want them to disturb the peace.”
