Epilogue

It was my wedding day. I was so excited, I could barely stay still. Everything had worked out nicely: Jake had written the queen, explaining everything, and the queen hadn’t responded, but we found out the new heir to the throne was a distant cousin of Jake’s. Jake and I lived in one of the apartment like rooms off the tunnels, just a few doors down from Nyx and Boyce. After everything was set, Jake and I had planned the wedding.

And now, here it was. I was wearing the dress Jake had given me long ago, the dark blue fabric with the gold trim. I wore matching gold shoes, and Nyx had pulled my hair into a twist, lacing it with a gold chain.

I walked into the clearing, past the few people who had come, to the front where Jake stood, looking handsome in his clothes. Boyce was standing beside him and Nyx was by my side as I turned to face him. I smiled and he returned it as we both waited for the preacher to start. “Dearly beloved…”

I barely heard the ceremony. I was focused on Jake and only Jake. I smiled as he slipped a ring on my finger and when I slipped one on his. We were married.

I leaned in to kiss him, feeling pure joy. When I pulled away, I knew this was it—this was the start of my new life. I had done it! I had fallen in love with the prince, I had made it through the woods, I had made new friends and a new life, and I had saved the prince, my beloved prince. But also, I had saved myself. With that thought going through my head, I walked through the clearing with Jake, leaning in for another kiss.
