Prologue
Early one
morning, two girls climbed out of a van and onto the driveway of a
quiet house. "Thanks Mom!" one of them called. She shoved
her dark brown bangs out of her eyes and began walking up the
driveway. "Come on Ren! We don't want to keep Jess and Jill
waiting!"
"I'm coming, I'm
coming."Ren called. "I just thought there was something in
one of my boots."
"That doesn't
surprise me,” the other girl told Ren. "Those boots are what,
5 years old?"
"Give me a break,
Stephanie, I love them, and they have cool shoelaces." Ren
grinned mischievously at Stephanie, who was ringing the
doorbell.
"Fine, but only this one
time."
"Sorry it took so long!"
a blond girl opened the door. "Jill was heating up some
guacamole."
“Give us some
guacamole and you’re forgiven." Stephanie told her, as she and
Ren walked in.
"So where's Jill?"
Ren asked. "Did she get abducted by aliens, Jess?"
"She's in her room, trying to set up the computer, she told me
to get you guys to help me get this to her room." Jessica
answered while shutting the door.
You
mean you left her alone? With technology?" Ren asked with mock
horror on her face.
"Yup."
Jessica answered, "Here," she handed Ren a bowl of
guacamole, "Steph can you get the drinks?"
"No problem, go save the computer from Jill." Stephanie
told them, laughter in her eyes.
Jessica
grabbed a bag of chips, before leading Ren down a hall. "Are you
going to type?"
"I probably
should," Ren said.
"Yeah, she's
way faster then me." A tall, freckled girl commented.
"Hey Jill!" Ren greeted her. "Where do you want
this?"
"Ummm..." Jill
looked around. There were several layers of yarn, white cloth,
knitting needles, crochet hooks, embroidery flosses and hoops, cat
fur, and book on almost every surface.
Jill moved a stack of folders and a history textbook off her computer
desk. "Just put it here for now."
Ren walked over to the computer and sat down. "Oh! I forgot to
show you guys my new earrings." Ren tucked her hair behind her
ears to reveal a rhinestone studded earring. "See it's
sparkly!"
"They're really
pretty, and sparkly." Jessica told Ren.
"Sparkly? Let me see!" In her rush to get to the desk, Jill
knocked the bowl of guacamole all over the wall outlet and
computer modem.
"This isn't good."
Jessica said, as the computer began flashing in neon colors. A high
pitched squealing sound filled the room.
"What's going on!?" Ren managed to yell before the
keyboard sucked them in with a roar of wind.
Stephanie walked into the room carrying a tray of drinks. The room
looked normal, for Jill. The guacamole was gone. There was a
minimized program running on the computer.
"Hey, where are you guys?" Stephanie called to the empty
room.
She shifted the tray so she could
hold it with one hand as she cleaned off a side table.
Glancing at the computer, Stephanie noticed the program.
Well, at least I can see what they've done and get started.
Stephanie sat down and clicked on the program. The sound and lights
roared to life once again.
Her last
thought before the roar of wind was, well, I'm in some serious
trouble now
