An Angel in New York City
I think I saw an Angel today
Wandering the streets of New York City
Didn't look like the rest of us
She wasn't bathed in dirt and rust
A glow shone out from her blue eyes
As she gazed up to the sky
She didn't yell or push or shove
She glided by just like a dove
She wore a smile on her face
While everyone else just bore disgrace
I followed her to Central Park
While the sky was growing dark
She walked among a field of flowers
And gazed up at the city's towers
I watched her glide on through the trails
Like a boat that's set its sails
And passes on into the sea
Graceful, beautiful, clean and free
Just the way I wish I'd be
But that is not a life for me
And then a moment quickly came
As though someone had called her name
She turned and looked upon my shame
I hid away, She smiled with no blame
She turned around and kept on walking
And I came out from my darkly stalking
She laughed and then she started running
Still so graceful, still so stunning
I took off after her right then
But she only grew faster and faster again
And then we came upon a clearing
Just as I thought that I was nearing
She stood before me, glowing brightly
Smiling there, and humming rightly
I took a halt to catch a breath
As I thought I'd run to death
I listened to her sing her song
And then I began to hum along
As though I'd known it long ago
But I knew it couldn't possibly be so
Still we stood there and we sang our song
And church bells far off joined along
At that time nothing could be wrong
And we laughed together once it was done
Then she looked up to the skies
Her smile faded and she closed her eyes
The world got darker, she started to cry
And I could do nothing but wonder why
Then she looked at me and said
"It's been fun, my newfound friend
But now it's time for this to end
I know one day we'll meet again
And I will watch you until then"
She looked up, then back at me
And I could swear she sprouted wings
I thought I saw an Angel today
But she just smiled and flew away.
