Gray Snow: Prologue
She could have sworn rain was in store on that dull, gray December day. The clouds overhead were fat with anticipation for the perfect moment to let everything they were holding in, fall. But when that moment came, she found herself surprised by the thick white snow pouring from the gray.
The day was not going well for Dana Verlay. She crawled out of her warm bed at six thirty a.m. and showered. She dressed in a red striped t-shirt that hugged her body and a red-orange zipper sweater with faded black jeans and her usual converse, of which she had every colour to go with whatever she wore. In today’s case, the chosen colour was red. Dana descended the staircase and ate her breakfast with as much idleness as possible.
Once done, she gathered her book bag and went to the one thing that would never let her down- her black 2003 Mustang, Black Betty, and then she was off to the one place that she would rather be fatally ill than face. Why, you may ask? Simply because today was the day that her boyfriend was going to break up with her publicly because the bet he took with his friends to go out with her, expired today so he didn’t have to endure her anymore. What a bunch of crap. Okay, so it wasn’t exactly simple but it wasn’t right either.
For half a year, half a year, he played her. He toyed with her delicate emotions and it hurt. She really thought Sebastian had loved her. So all night, Dana had prepared herself for the humiliation she would soon face, thinking of ways to counteract it. She could break up with him first but that would be too obvious and cowardly in her books. So instead she decided to play it cool and go with the flow of things. Act like she didn’t care.
As she drove Black Betty through the streets of the dark London morning, she went over her plan again. She parked in the students’ parking lot and fixed her face in the rear-view mirror to show a mask absent of emotion. Even though on the inside, she wanted to curl up in a ball and stay in bed for three weeks. It was completely cruel to pretend to love someone for money. She didn’t even want to know how much he was paid.
Dana took a deep breath to compose herself and climbed out, grabbing her book bag on the way and headed to meet her fate through the front doors of Nesera High.
So this is the first story I've written in a long time. What seems like ages to me. But you know, sometimes its just really difficult to get inspiration and try to come up with a unique plot that hasn't been overdone like those stories about a new guy picking on the girl he likes and they eventually fall madly in love and all the other girls are jealous, etc. And all the other cliches. But my life isn't as busy as it was last semester so i can promise that everyday on my block 2 spare when i have nothing to do, i'll be working on this. I know what it's like to wait and it's a pain but we have lives and its difficult to get around that sometimes. I take my time coming up with the right words and the right order so i'm not going to be like those writers who churn out a new chapter everyday. I don't know how they do it but that's amazing, really.
Reviews are so so helpful. If i get a lot of reviews, i'll become more inspired. I'm pretty self-conscious about my writing so if something is wrong or if you really liked it, it's pleasing to know so that i can fix it or i can maybe put another chapter out faster. I'm sure you've heard it said before. But it's really true.
Now i'll stop this babbling before your eyes bleed. Thanks for reading and all that other stuff.
