It Just Slipped

I try to control myself,

to rein back how I feel

so it isn’t all too obvious

at how much sanity you steal.

I hold my tongue, I bite it,

I try not to say a word,

but all kinds of things slip past me

that I wonder if you heard.

I close my eyes, I’m mortified,

I try not to show my shame.

Once again my tongue has slipped

and failed to be tame.

I put on a smile,

I take a breath and hold.

I hope you won’t see through this act;

truth is, I’m not that bold.

It’s just a chain reaction.

Words just slip right through the air.

There are things that I say

that I never knew were there.

I don’t realise the extent

of my lack of self-control

until the words are out my mouth,

and by then I’m on a roll.

There are all these things inside me

that I never thought I’d find,

until they flew straight from my lips.

Although…you don’t seem to mind.
