A Safe Distance

As you hold my hand in yours,

and stroke my fingers, every one,

imagine we have been declared

and acceptance has been done.

I don’t mind the secrecy,

I just wish I could know

for sure, that when you touch me

you’re meaning to do so.

You handle me with such care

that I know you have intent,

but where is it leading to?

I can’t read the signals that you’ve sent.

Maybe this is all I get.

At least it is a start.

Here, I remain your soft spot,

a safe distance from your heart.
