Falconium Envy
Prologue
Chase yawned, stretching as he unfolded his legs from the back of his parents’ car, glad that the five-hour drive was finally over, everyone in this country drove so slowly. They-being Chase, his mother, his father and their German Shepard Sully- had just flown in from Italy the night before and had been on the road ever since so they had arrived in their old town at a ridiculously early hour and obviously no one of interest would be awake. He rolled his shoulders, hearing them pop and seeing his mum wince- she hated it when he and his father did that- and he smiled impishly. She walked past him, towards the house and swatted his head, a small smile tucked into the corner of her mouth.
Wanting to avoid the first burst of dust to emanate from the house that had been closed up for almost ten years took his time surveying his old neighbourhood. He had lived here until he was nine but his father had to go home, to Italy because his Grandfather was dying. The family had moved, picking up Sully along the way from somewhere, he didn’t remember where but supposed they had just found him and brought him along for the ride, as his mother was often want to do. After his dad’s nonno had died they had decided to stay for a while, a couple more weeks, his mother had said, hi father had nodded in agreement. A couple of weeks led to a month, a month to a year and now, ten years later…. Here they were.
It really hadn’t changed at all around here- the same flashy houses adorned the same perfectly groomed pieces of land. There was still the park across from his own house, where he remembered going often to play with his friends. This led him to wondering if they were still around, if only he could remember their names- two little boys, one with golden-blonde hair and one with hair almost as black as his own… and a girl with fiery-red pig-tails. He smiled as he remembered how he used to tease her, pulling her hair and throwing mud at her. His smile widened as he remembered she always gave as good as she got and he’d often gone home as muddy and dirty as she.
….Taryn….
The name breezed through the back of his mind as memories played out before him. She was a year younger than him, if he remembered correctly with green eyes to match her hair and an Irish temper to match her hair.
….Zane….
The boy with the black hair. He remembered how they were often mistaken as brothers or cousins because o their looks and age being almost identical. The only difference- Chase’s eyes were dark brown, almost black some days whereas Zane’s were a startling blue.
….Trey….
The boy with the golden hair. A cold shiver ran up his spine as he thought of the little boys’ happy blue-green eyes and he couldn’t, for the life of him, figure out why. He shook it off and turned to go back inside, something however caught his eye, something that hadn’t been there ten years ago- a new building three houses down and on the other side of the street.
It wasn’t as flashy and posh as the other houses in the street but it was just as large, if not larger than some. It reminded him of a school but looked nowhere near as foreboding. He could hear the quiet strumming of a guitar coming from the building and snuck out into the street, standing on his toes to get a better look. If anyone saw him now they’d think he was loony for sure but he really didn’t care- he was too curious about the new building and it’s occupants.
Sitting on the window ledge at the very top of the building was a girl around his age slowly strumming a guitar and humming. He could only hear snatches of the tune but it made him smile. It was sweet and light but sprinkled with sadness. He observed the girl as she concentrated on her guitar, she had milk-white skin with freckles spattered along her arms and lightly across the bridge of her nose, red-brown hair tied in a knot at the back of her head and long, thin fingers perfect for their current purpose. Her head was bowed but, as though she felt eyes upon her, she looked up, startling him with bright green eyes, eyes he had definitely seen before. He grinned and waved slightly.
‘Hi.’ He mouthed, bouncing up and down on his toes as she raised a sceptical eyebrow at him, the corner of her mouth turning up slightly. He cocked his head to the side and stared at her, although she was almost smiling, he could see the hidden sadness in her eyes, the sadness that filtered through her music. She narrowed her eyes at him, placing her guitar inside the window and copied him, cocking her head to the side. He smiled, moving his head to the other side and again, she copied. He stood up straight and put his hands on his hips with his nose in the air. She didn’t bother to get up but imitated him with her hands on her hips and her nose in the air. It was Chase’s turn to narrow his eyes at her, which she copied then added to his pose by sticking her tongue out at him.
“Chase?” his mother called from the door, interrupting their game, “¿cosa sta facendo?” She asked in Italian-What are you doing?
“Nulla la mamma.” He replied- Nothing mum- rolling his eyes as she stood in the doorway, hands on hips, eyeing him carefully, as though she did think him crazy.
“Buono…. Venga in ed aiuto.” She ordered- Good…. Come inside and help- with a nod and a small smile before walking back inside.
“Yes mum.” He called, switching back into English before looking up at the girl again. She was watching him with a smile. He waved to her once again and called out to her softly, “Fino a che bella ragazza di prossimo volta.” He bowed at the girl in the window with a grin and walked inside.
The girl in the window watched him go, brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear with a bemused smile. What on earth did he just say?
(NOTE: ‘Fino a che bella ragazza di prossimo volta.’- Explained in pending chapter)
By the way, I'm using songs in this stoory that are in no way my own, because I suck at song writing so I have put the names of the artist and song title next to the lyrics throughout the story.
Any way, i hope you enjoy. R&R for me so i can continue.
Luv ya.
