A Moment

Written By; Megan Mulvihill

In dedication to the lives lost in, or as a result of, the attack of September 11, 2001

It was a frightening moment.

All we could do was stare.

Shock was replaced by horror as the smoke billowed out.

It seemed as if we could hear the cries of pain and anguish from three thousand miles away.

The flag was immediately set to half-mast.

We spent the day listening.

Watching.

Praying.

But the noise deafened.

The smoke engulfed.

And as the buildings crumbled, hearts stopped.

Eyes widened.

We waited with baited breath.

The dust settled.

There was nothing left.

In seconds it was gone.

They were gone.

Millions died.

How could it happen?

How could all those people die?

They were innocent.

They’d done nothing wrong.

They woke up early every morning.

They dressed professionally.

They sat at their desks.

They worked hard.

They had a life.

They were supposed to be safe.

We were supposed to be safe.

Has everyone forgotten that day?

Has everyone forgotten the pain we all felt?

The cries we gave as people we didn’t even know died?

Our country was crippled.

Our people killed senselessly.

But all we can think about is war.

Someone, please, take a moment.

Give a thought to those that lost their lives just trying to live.

Give a thought to those that lost their lives in revenge.

Give a thought to the families ruined.

Give a thought to the lives destroyed.

And give a thought to the life you have to live.

Live this moment for those people.

Live as they don’t have the chance to.

And smile.

Give a little of yourself to make today a better day than yesterday.
