A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes
(When You're Fast Asleep)
I am fast asleep
in my world of fantasy
where I think tragic thoughts
have no way to reach me.
Sleep is the one place
to escape from you
and all of the pain
we've both been through.
At last in my sleep,
I'm having a dream
that's joyful and true
and pleasant, it seems.
In my dream,
I slowly awake,
glance to my side
and I see your face.
Lying beside me.
Sunlight on your cheeks.
The most beautiful sight
I have ever seen.
Your arms are around me -
Their warmth I can feel.
Your skin is so smooth.
This must be real.
Your eyes are closed
But you're awake - you must be;
No one smiles that big
While they are asleep.
Then I speak
and you listen closely.
In my bed, in your heart -
I know you can hear me.
I say, "Please don't speak,
Or squeeze me much closer;
You'll wake me up
and this dream will be over."
I wake up.
I look next to me.
You aren't there.
You never will be.
I cry as I wish
My dream could be true.
Because I just realized
I still love you.
