In the Sea of Moshers
Nikki stands around and waits for the concert to start. The buzz around her fills her ears, her friends are laughing, she tunes them out. Her mind turns to him again. He stole her heart, only to cheat. All she hears is his last cruel words to him. None of it makes sense. The band takes the stage and the music starts. The crowd erupts. She is pushed hard and she pushes back. All is lost now. She feels bodies pressed against her. They surge forward, closer to the heroes on stage. He leaves her mind. Her ears are ringing, the music is loud. She doesn’t know the words, she can’t sing along. But she screams when the crowd screams. Her friends are lost. She’s alone. Spinning in circles, all the faces are a blur. One stands out. Red shirt, blue eyes. He smiles, she smiles back. But she is pushed again and taken away. Nikki feels bruises on her shins forming, her hair is being pulled, and she almost falls. A helping hand picks her up. How nice.
Her mind travels to a place where she made sense, when she heard him say I love you. Always was the sweet type. His last words made no sense, his lack of caring threw her off. She closed her eyes and went where the crowd took her. But his face was in her mind. Was it a lie? Did he really cheat? Or was it just another chance, just another way to make her find better. Nikki shakes her head, it couldn’t be that, her luck wasn’t that good. She feels arms around her. She looks back. Red shirt, blue eyes. She says nothing to him, but feels the music vibrate her body. This song she knows, she knows it well. Strobes come on. Nikki’s shouting out every word. “All this time you promised me, everything would work out in the end. YOU WERE GRAVELY MISTAKEN.” Tears well up in her eyes, she holds them back. No point in thinking about the past when the guy behind her could be her future. For once she’s happy, in the middle of a crowd.
Smelling the sweat and smoke. Happiness can be without him, if only in a sea of moshers. It feels like she’s in the eye of the storm, there’s calm within her.
Maybe her ex didn’t cheat, maybe she could make things right. Maybe she could start things up with the boy behind her. It doesn’t matter; she’ll go where she’s taken. For now she’ll push when she’s pushed, sing when she knows the words, and leave her future for tomorrow.
