(VERSE ONE)
I was with them as they walked up the porch steps
She opened the door and I could tell that she knew
We asked, "Could we please come inside?"
And she nodded and ushered us in
Quietly we told her the bad news
Kevin was dead he'd been killed yesterday
She gasped and dropped to the couch
I sat down beside her and I heard her whisper…
(Chorus)
Kevin always wanted to be a soldier
He wanted to give his life so others would be free
And you got to always remember
That he's in heaven watching over you…and me
(VERSE TWO)
Down the hall their little girl came
Unknown to her that her Daddy was gone
She asked for a glass of water and her mother took her hand
She said, "I have to tell you something sad."
The little girl looked afraid and glanced around
"Daddy's gone to heaven to wait for us."
The tears began to fall and her mother said…
(Chorus)
Daddy always wanted to be a soldier
He wanted to give his life so others would be free
And you got to always remember
That he's in heaven watching over you…and me
(VERSE THREE)
Everyone was dressed in black
Except the soldiers who had come to honor their fallen comrade
The flag was taken from the coffin and handed to the woman
She took it carefully and set it by her side
They asked her if she wanted to say something
She nodded, stood, and said….
(Chorus)
Kevin always wanted to be a soldier
He wanted to give his life so others would be free
And you got to always remember
That he's in heaven watching over you…and me
(VERSE FOUR)
There wasn't a dry eye in the room as she walked back to her seat
The people were touched and amazed
That this man had given everything up, so they could be free
And as they went home that evening everyone could hear a whisper in their mind
(Chorus)
Kevin always wanted to be a soldier
He wanted to give his life so others would be free
And you got to always remember
That he's in heaven watching over you…and me
He's in heaven watching over you…and me
