I walked over to the girl, she was still breathing. Okay, no one murdered anyone while I was sleeping and decided to dump the body here, strike that off the list. I crouched down and took a good look at her. This was someone I knew. She was from my French class... Emily... Her long, black hair with dyed stripes of white were a dead giveaway. We were friends since elementary school, but what was she doing here? Naked?
Seven o'clock. Jeffrey was gonna wake up any moment, but he'll sleep again when he finds out that there isn't any school today. My dad, snow or not, had five or six more hours before he even had to get up. Plenty of time for an explanation and an escape, I could probably grab breakfast. I sound like I've been through this before in my head, I know I'm anything but.
"Hey." I shook her a little.
Nothing.
"Come on, wake up..." I muttered to her face, shaking her again, she turned slightly, and I saw something in the lamplight. Little dots of scar tissue on her shoulder.
My eyebrows raised. I think I know what happened to the wolf.
Emily's eyes suddenly popped open, she gaveone gasp before her fist found my nose.
I fell to the ground, she punched hard... If she wasn't lying down she'd probably have enough strength to knock me out. I felt blood on my upper lip. She stood up and I found myself crawling back up to my bed.
"Oh my god."
I swear we said that at the same time.
I staggered up and grabbed some tissues from the dresser. I kept my eyes off of her while I went to my closet, one hand pinching my nose, and tossed out a sweater and a pair of old jeans.
My back still turned, I waved my hand to her and said, "Just... Put on some clothes first."
This was one messed-up wakeup call.
"Hey Em." I said, still not turning back.
"I don't mind." She said flatly.
I looked back, my discarded moss green sweater seemed to fit... I couldn't think of anything to say, so many questions to ask, so many things I wanted to do, all of it overwhelmed me. I opened my mouth, but nothing came out but air. I'll just act like everyone else when they had no idea what was going on, stupid. It's a good conversation starter.
"How'd you get in here?"
"Climbed through the window." She said almost immediately.
"From the outside?" I gave her a skeptical glance.
Emily hesitated, "Yeah, exactly."
"You're a horrible liar, you know that?"
The sound of my little brother's door opening his bedroom door was heard, I assumed she heard him before I did because she was already running into my closet and closing the door.
"Hey, school's closed!" I called from my room, "Go back to sleep."
"I have to go to the bathroom, stupid!" My little brother's obnoxious voice called back.
Soon, there was the flush of the toilet and the closing of the door. Back to conversation.
I knocked on the closet door and opened it, "Safe."
I helped her out of my messy closet, I don't know how her feet dodged the junk on the floor, but they seemed to have managed.
She tripped out, but she found her balance, "Thanks."
"My closet's not the best of hiding places." I said. I went to back to my bed and sat down, "So how did you get in here?"
Her mouth was opening, about to say something, but she closed it, she spoke.
"What, you don't know?"
"I'm not that stupid." I smiled uneasily, I tried to continue, but the words got caught in my throat, others were jammed in my mind like rush hour traffic. The whole idea of her being... I still can't say it, it's just the whole idea of it, it was just absurd! I slapped myself, this had to be a dream.
