Harbinger

Prologue:
I, Noxmor, am a Harbinger. Our purpose is simple: To destroy. We have had many names in the past. I remember we were once called ‘The Harbingers of Chaos that fly on death-shadowed wings’ by a poet of one of the many planets we have since annihilated. It was from that epithet that we became known as Harbingers.
Very few species can comprehend the true impact of our task, for how can anything be built without a clean slate? Without destruction? In a universe as full as this for something to be created there first must be room for it to do so. That was our job.
My hands are stained with the blood of countless species, gods and worlds. Do I feel guilty? In a sense, yes. But understand that out of the ruins of the past, the future will rise, bringing a new beginning and hopefully a better one. That was what made it all worth it.
I am considered one of the less heartless Harbingers, but then again, I was the infiltrator, the spy. I informed the others of who to kill, and when. We each have our own traits, creating the faultless team all 21 of us are.
A new planet was to be created; one called Aleria, later called Earth. It was the Almighty’s retaliation against the Chaos, who had created a demonic world without consulting the other two. The Universe, the great mother, had already left for somewhere unknown. Creatures of this planet were going to be ‘dead’. They would live in a ‘dead’ world with no individuality or flaws. At least that was my opinion.
There were many planets like this at the time, both the Almighty and the Chaos trying to overcome each other. Both sides refused to listen to our pleas for a compromise.
It was then that we came to a decision. It was then that we gave our gift. We essentially brought life to this planet. We were the serpents that convinced Eve to eat the fruit of knowledge, metaphorically of course. We gave them souls and individuality.
Little did we know that we had given them more than that. From the single dominant species on the planet more species began to form, each with a gift. From humans with their ingenuity, the elves with their beauty and the vampires with their darkness, a change was wrought upon Aleria. We had unknowingly given them magic. Our magic.
The Almighty did something unexpected then, and attacked us. In our weakened state we could not hold our ground but he couldn’t kill us as our creator was gone. Instead our souls were banished among the people we had animated.
In a last attempt at freedom we brought the Almighty with us to suffer the same fate. But balance had to be maintained and the Chaos and the Universe’s souls were also banished to Aleria. This planet had become more powerful than any other planet created.
Some of us found that we could connect with our hosts, whereas others, the leaders of the Harbingers, were pushed into the depths of our host’s mind. I was a leader, as was Morinia, Lunaris, Bezan, Solarius and Hiroshi. Darius, the greatest of the Harbingers, was so deep in his host’s subconscious that we feared he could never escape.
But we are not completely helpless. A part of us still retains our old knowledge and the means to reclaim our power, buried in the subconscious of our souls. Destiny foretold our return. And when I was banished, I swore I would reawaken in one born of darkness.
Our magic given to this world is slowly returning to us, making us more powerful than ever before. It has grown in its time in this world, and it does not obey us as readily as it once would have done.
So I merely watch and wait until the day finally comes. When the last dredges of magic are returned from this world to us. When I can fly across the skies, the seas, and the celestial mists on my black wings again.
