More Than a Shadow

They say you’re just a shadow,

you can’t help me when I’m down.

But They don’t see your gaze behind

that blackened shadow frown.

I see the way your arms twitch

when it looks as if I’ll fall,

and the way you speed to catch up

when I’m going too fast for it all.

You never seem to be

further than a pace behind.

Guarding me, helping me;

you’re always there to find.

They say there’s only so much

a shadow can do to aid,

but They don’t see the way you fix

every mistake that I have made.

You’re there, looming over me,

They see that every time,

but what They refuse to see

is your hand holding mine.

If there’s only so much a shadow can do

to stop Them when I fall,

then you mustn’t be a shadow,

because you have stopped Them all.
