Chapter 2
Eating Souls
Several blood filled dreams; and she is still asleep, or so she thinks. Her screams brought the predator to her. "Haven't I told you yet? You aren't to scream or more pain will be caused," the creature said before twisting something deep inside her. She felt her need to call out, but she clenched her teeth on her lower lip letting blood flow freely down her chin. "Does it hurt?" He asked in a whisper. "Jenny, tell me you pain..."
Sweat was pouring down her face, her night gown was soaked and blood dripped from her lip as she climbed out of the bed. She found the light turning it on. The walls she could see were caked in blood the fear that she had was coming true, and somethign dead was grabbing at her, shaking her.
"Anne, shh, it's just an illusion," she turned to look at her boyfriend. His face was pushing on bitter grief. She looked back at the room, nothing, it was all normal. Her breath caught for a moment before looking at him. "Let's get you something to eat and drink." He said pulling her to her feet. He sat her down in the kitchen before turning to get some soda and something to eat. Anne fidgetted with her hair and her neck jerked this way and that as she nervously counted down how long it was going to take until another illusion arrived.
"What was her name?" Anne asked the wall. Her boyfriend looked at her briefly before setting down the soda in a glass and some peanut butter crunch bars in frotn of her.
"Who's name?" He asked.
Anne looked annoyed and ignored the soda. "The girl from the case," she said as she got up walking to her office. She picked up the folder on top and looked at the picture, the girl from her dreams. "Jenny Maguire," she read. "Jenny," she whispered. Her boyfriend was standing in the door way watching her as if she would break down at any moment.
"Who is this Jenny?" He asked her as if he was a shrink.
"The girl who we found yesterday, she had died from seemingly nothing." Anne stood up quickly before walking out past her boyfriend and grabbing her jacket. She slipped her shoes on, but not before her boyfriend grabbed her arm trying to stop her.
"Where are you going? It's 2:00 AM, you just woke from a bad dream and illusions that aren't real, you aren't fit to drive." He wasn't commanding her was pleading, obviously used to losing most arguements.
"I have things to do Joe, don't wait up," she kissed his cheek before running out to her car and starting up the engine. He stood from the door as he watched her drive off.
"Damn," he whispered before turning and reentering the house.
"Anne," the voice was over the radio, not the police radio, the car radio. "Stop this right now. You are going to get yourself hurt." It was her mother, it was always her mother.
"I can take care of myself," Anne replied before shutting off the radio. She drove down the empty back road looking for the turn off. There was no one there, then suddenly there was. Anne hit the brake stopping directly in front of a girl. She climbed out of the car as quickly as possibly rushing to the person, now sitting in the middle of the road.
"Are you okay?" Anne asked looking into her eyes. She was wet, but there was no water and it was a warm night.
"The radio, it calls me." The girl whispered looking into Anne's eyes. Her purple and black eyes were glaring at her almost. "Turn on the radio." She said. Anne nods running to the car and turning it on.
"Listen to me Anne, it's not a good night to go roaming, get back home, now." Anne looked up to see the girl gone. A chill was running down her spine as she put the car into drive. She hit the gas before turning and speeding back towards the house. She felt a small tickle on the back of her neck as she was driving, but ignored it. The tickle was getting strong, it was wet. She felt fatigue washing over her and the world turned blue. She wasn't in the car anymore she was swimming. She felt herself struggle for breathe as she fought to the surface. Stormy waters raged pushing her back and forth.
"WAKE UP!" Someone yelled pulling Anne from her sleep. The girl from the road was sitting next to her. Anne was in the car again.
"What the hell is happening?" Anne asked the girl.
"No time to explain, we have to get to your house, don't fall asleep." the girl was shivering, cold, she had dark circles under her eyes. Anne saw the house and pulled up to the door. She jumped out quickly before opening the other side and pulling the small girl into the house. The girl seemed to wriggle with relief and sighed as she fell into the kitchen.
"Joe?" Anne called casually before helping the girl out of her wet clothes and into a t-shirt. "We're safe here right?" Anne asked.
"Not completely." The girl responded. "There is one room not protected from them." Although Anne had no clues as to who they were she felt a near hysteria rise into her voice as she shrieked.
"JOE!" She cried running, running, and screaming, but it was already too late for anyone to do more than scream. Anne knew it, the girl knew it, and Joe would never know it again.
