"Vivian, what's wrong?" A fourteen year old girl, trying her hardest to hide her face and the tears which covered it with a textbook hurried madly through the crowded hallway, not worrying who or what she bumped into. She did not hear the question of her best friend, and did not care. The thick black bands which covered the lacerations on her wrists were starting to irritate her pale white skin, and a rash was forming up her left arm. She was so fed up with all of her problems, that she suddenly felt something in her mind snap.
As if it were the only battered rope which pulled the two sides of her conscious mind together, the oh-so-fine line between right and wrong, the divider which disappeared so quickly soon was felt in its lack of presence. Vivian dropped her book, and then madly grabbed at the black cloth on his lower arms. She pulled them off one by one, flinging them in opposite directions, and let out a painful shriek before pushing some more people out of the way and forcing herself through the school's exit.
In the fresh air, she did not feel that she had time for a breath. Instead, she began to move as fast as her feet would carry her into the wooded area behind the building and when she finally opened her eyes, she realized she was lost.
It had seemed like such a short period of time, the time in which she'd left the school and wound up here. But somehow, she was already deep into the forest and could not figure out how she'd arrived or how to exit. There were no houses in sight, no signs of people, and she at once realized something was terribly wrong. There was no way the woods were this big, and even if they were she couldn't have been in this deep.
"H-hello?" she squeaked, nervously. In her heart she did not expect an answer, but she was praying so intently for one that she didn't care what she had to do to obtain one. "Is anyone there?" And again, nothing. "Please! Please, somebody. Anybody!"
As if in response, there was suddenly the sound of a piano. Ever so calmly it was playing, somehow...coming from all directions. The gentle notes moving so gingerly through the air, Vivian suddenly felt herself suddenly at ease. And then the music began to melt away, isolating itself to one origin; directly in front of the adolescent girl. Instinctively, she began to follow it. Just like earlier, she found her feet moving on her own.
The branches and rocks beneath her feet were mysteriously silent as she trampled them, barely moving in bustle. There was a universal peace in the sound, and Vivian also felt herself suddenly at ease. Extremely so.
"Who...are you?" she asked, softly.
"Who are you?"
"I'm...nobody important, really..."
"Neither am I."
"I...think that you're playing...very lovely. I...just would like to have your name."
"I don't have a name."
"Where are you?"
"I am...everywhere." Not stopping, Vivian looked around but saw only trees. Not even animals, it seemed that this location was truly empty of life except for her, and whoever the person she was talking to was. And she knew all of this- about the trees- even though her eyes were closed. When she opened them, she suddenly found herself standing still now, before a boy about her age sitting at a piano.
"Hello."
"Hello."
"You...are an amazing pianist."
"As are you."
"What...? That's not true, I've never even tried, I'm sure I'm-"
"Here. Why don't you try?" And he turned to her, his skin as white as hers yet different. It was not the sickly and disgusting way that Vivian's skin was, it was...beautiful. It was almost the same shade, yet something about it was so different.
Obeying, Vivian shyly took a seat next to the boy at the piano, and placed her fingers innately on the ivory keys. The boy placed his over hers, and began to push them down as he pleased, forming a song.
And gradually, he let go. Before she knew it, Vivian found herself playing the beautiful melody from before but having no idea as to how she was doing it.
"You want to meet my friend, don't you?" he asked. Still playing, Vivian nodded.
"Kylie...the visitor is here." As enigmatically as the boy, an older girl then walked into the scene. She was literally the most beautiful person Vivian had ever seen, so captivating that she froze in place upon seeing the girl.
It was hard to place a finger on exactly one thing. Vivian tried desperately to take in the woman's entire image, but could not do so in the time before she was addressed.
"You wanted to meet me, didn't you?"
Vivian nodded, suddenly understanding what was happening.
"Do you want to be...beautiful?"
"More than anything, I-"
"Do you truly desire that above all else?"
"...yes."
"Then...beauty, I shall bestow upon you at no cost or penalty. Again, is that...what you really want?"
"Yes."
"Then...it is yours."
