To the Fullest

Humans make life seem to be simple. You are born and you die. In between these two events, we love, have sex, and obtain money. We win friendships and reach the top of our careers. We set up families, establish communities and create countries. We are told we need to make it to the top and achieve our dreams. Then we are supposed to be “satisfied”. But there always seems to be something more. Something we’re missing, and always fail to obtain. What is it?

If, right now, someone asked you to sky dive, would you do it? If your friend asked you to go somewhere you have never even heard of, would you travel there? If it was pouring outside, would you go and dance in the rain? For most people, I think that the answer to at least two of these questions would be no. Most people wouldn’t want to sky dive. Most people wouldn’t want to travel to an unknown place. And I don’t believe that standing in the rain, getting chilled to your bones, isn’t your idea of fun; and the main reason is fear: especially of the unknown.

Most people are scared of what they don’t know. We want to understand everything; it’s human nature. Scientists study it. We research it. Everyone tries to obtain it. I believe that the reason we do this is because lurking in the unknown, is the inevitable fear. We try and eliminate it and try to live without it. Though, for some reason, we are never able to fully escape it. So we come up with a solution: run away.

When we are scared of something, we try to avoid it. If we are scared of getting physically hurt, we avoid sports, heights, and danger. If we are scared of getting sick, we stay inside. If we are scared of being rejected, we hide from relationships. We become isolated, surrounded by our fear. It creates an iron wall, keeping us from feeling the world that we live in. Instead of it protecting us like we intended that wall to do, it hurts us. It stops us from life. Then the biggest challenge you have to face is yourself; and the fear that lives in you.

Have you ever heard a story that has a rich man and a poor man? In it, the rich man has accomplished all of his goals, lives well, and has a lot of money, yet there is always something inside him that makes him feel empty. Next to him (just figuratively) is the poor man. While he lives in a small house, has a small income, and works a lot just to pay the bills, he seems happy with his life. I think that the reason the rich man feels empty inside is because he was only concerned with material things: money, cars, large houses, etc. When that is all you have, it becomes lonely. You become so wrapped up in material things that you miss out in the joys of life.

I have been told to live life to the best. Parents and teachers have filled our heads with “You can be anything you want if you put your mind into it.” This is a true statement, but I believe that within that statement, something can be lost. People need to live life to its fullest. What that means…well, you’ll have to figure that one on your own.
