Hana gasped, she was awake

Hana gasped, she was awake. She lay in bed, perfectly still, in some sort of fear that she wasn’t dreaming. After telling herself that she was safe in her own room, she relaxed a bit. For a while longer she waited, perhaps for her yellow eyed nightmares to come bursting through the door with machine guns; but they never came. She turned to lie on her back and stretched her feet till they hit the bottom of the bed. Sighing, she blinked slowly, taking in all of her dream from the previous night.

It couldn’t happen; the undead just simply didn’t exist. And they wouldn’t attack her school, and they wouldn’t keep her alive. Hana tried desperately to explain to herself that if anything like that happened, that she would be in front, ready to protect her friends. She felt her eyes start to sting with tears. She wouldn’t fight, she would run; because she was afraid of death.

Hana was at school, early as usual. Since last year she had walked the 10 minute walk to school, at 7:00. It seemed odd, only because school didn’t start till 8:10. The time was used by Hana relax alone, at least for 20 minutes till her friends arrived. After a while all of Hana's friends started to arrive around 7:30 so they could hang out before school.

First to arrive, as usual was a very short girl named Kay. She was larger then most of her friends and was affectionately named “Lesbo”. Kay was, obviously, a lesbian, their friends didn’t mind. She wasn’t a very happy-go-lucky person. And Kay’s sense of humor was, as Hana commonly thought, very twisted. Kay’s very wavy brown hair just barely touched her shoulders, and brown eyes glanced at Hana through rectangular glasses.

Kay waved at Hana and sat down in the courtyard area. Hana sat across from Kay, resting on the wall. Kay simply looked up to acknowledge her presence then returned to doing her own homework. Hana smiled to herself and sat. Being around Kay was comforting to Hana, when they weren’t disagreeing about something. Kay had experience with cutting around the same time as Hana and she felt more relaxed when she was around someone who could relate to her.

After sitting in a long silence, Hana turned to find two tall thin boys walking towards her. The closest boy was taller than the second and stood nearly a head over Hana. He had short light brown hair, and a small round face. He was about 20 paces in front of his brother had dark brown hair which nearly reached the bottom of his neck. His face was thinner, and walk was much more bouncy then his twins’ was.

Hana was first to greet them, “Hi Brandon, Hey Chris.”

Kay looked up from her homework. “Oh hey Burr’s” The pair walked to the two girls and dropped their bags heavily on the floor.

The shorter named Chris scowled at Kay, “Don’t call me that.”

Kay looked at Chris. “Well that is your name isn’t it?”

Chris argued while Brandon and Hana began rapidly talking about Legend of Zelda. After a few minutes of a “logical” discussion of some sort, Chris turned back to face the two talking silently so Kay wouldn’t hear.

“Max is here.”

Brandon looked quickly then turned back and made a face, Chris also turned away without much emotion displayed on his features. Hana laughed a little at their actions and waved at the boy named Max. He wasn’t as tall as the two twins, but was still stood four inches above Hana. His dark brown, almost black, hair was in extremely curly locks. His hair seemed to frame his face in a dark sort of aura. His walk was even more jumpy then Chris’ and to make it worse his hair only added to the effect.

“Hey.” He said simply. “I didn’t do my English homework. Kay! Will you help me?” He looked at his seemingly closest friend and put on his best pout face. Chris and Brandon both rolled their eyes at this.

“Fine,” she said in an annoyed voice “What didn’t you do today?”

Brandon, Chris and Hana turned away from the two and continued to talk about video games. They brushed on some manga and anime, Hana begun obsessing about Harry/Draco as Brandon and Chris sighed, very disinterested in the new topic. Hana had just began her streak when Max shouted.

“DELILAH!” He ran over and gave the girl a hug. She was very tall with usually curly black hair and an almost maroon eye color. Delilah stepped back as Max hugged her tightly. When he released her the group could clearly see her grey bell bottom jeans, studded belt and hot pink band shirt. Her now straightened hair covered her left eye, which was like the right done with eye liner.

She looked at Hana who smiled back. Pulling Hana to a standing position Delilah started freaking about the fanfic she was reading. Hana nodded, adding commentary when necessary, completely involved in her conversation.

When Delilah had finished Hana looked back at her friends, she jumped, startled a little, then plainly said, “Where did all of you come from?” Sure enough about twice the amount of people she thought was there had appeared during her conversation.

Hana saw Max and his “girlfriend”, Morgan, wrestling Kay on the floor to get something from her. The trio was making so much commotion that everyone had stopped to look. Once the object was successfully apprehended from Kay, Hana looked at a group sitting across the hall. They were making fun of the three and were laughing at one boy who was doing impressions of Max. Hana tried to listen but all that she heard was “Freaks”

Hana and turned back to Delilah, Hana smile when she saw Luis walking towards them. She welcomed her boyfriend’s embrace followed by a quick peck on the lips. Luis’ hair had an array of colors, blue, brown and pink; the last two seemed to be fading, causing the rainbow on his head to become greater. Luis grinned warmly at Hana.

“You’re late.” Hana looked at Luis sternly.

“I’m sorry!” He said with a Hispanic accent, “my father wanted to drive me and he wouldn’t let me walk, he always says that I come in too early and-”

“It’s ok, Luis” Hana exasperated. “I was joking!” Hana hugged him tightly, her body pressed against his, her arms wrapped around his tiny waist. He was only a few inches taller, but he was smaller than Hana in every other way. She even out weighed him by five pounds. Even so, Hana still felt like a little girl being protected when she was in his arms. The couple stayed like that for a while, Hana placed her head on Luis’ chest, feeling his heart beat loud and steadily. She closed her eyes and limped her body into his, surprised with the sudden weight; Luis took a couple steps back. Hana laughed and pulled back from Luis.

“Sorry!” She said, still laughing “Don’t be so weak. I could lift you up.” Luis gave her a strict look. “Ok…maybe not, but still I’m not that heavy”

“Of course not,” he said, kissing her forehead “I never said you were.” Luis glanced at his watch, “Oh, It’s time to go Hana.” He picked up his messenger bag from the floor and slung it around his head. Hana turned around, and grabbed the strap to her ‘Fruits Basket’ messenger bag; she also put it on her shoulder. Luis and Hana waved goodbye to everyone and walked hand in hand, down the hall.
