There are some things that we will never understand. Quests we must go on that never seem to show a true result, people we’ve known since childhood but never truly met, obstacles we overcome but never truly see the reasoning behind them.
And that is life. Simply that.
But in reality… life is far from simple.
Nothing is simple in reality… not a single thing… Least of all…love.

Years ago, Virginia O’Connor disappeared in the middle of a war. Nearly ten years later, her best friend, Viola Gunner stumbles upon a cemetery where a man from their pasts sits beside a grave. But there’s the story he’s going to tell her. One for the history books… a true testimony of love.
Chapter Eight –Interlude I: HarmonyIn the midst of it all, one of the ‘heroes’ of the war fell in love. Some thought her selfish to do so... but she would not have chosen then to fall... especially not with one such as she did...
...not with a traitor...

A young man sat in the back of a taxicab, his dark, cobalt blue eyes searching the photo album in front of him. His hair was pulled into a short, dark tail that rested on his neck. He brought his hands over a picture of four teens, one of which was him.
The four were dressed in private school uniforms. His picture was in the center, his arm around a young girl with flaming red hair. To his left a boy who looked much like the red-headed girl stood holding hands with a girl with dark brown hair. Both the redhead siblings had light blue eyes and the brown hair girl had stunning violet eyes. It was apparent by the look on his face that these people meant the world to him… it was apparent by the look in his eyes that they weren’t there.
His cell phone rang and pulled him out of his memories. He answered it with a dry hello.
“Adam?” a woman’s voice asked. The man brightened.
“Hey Marina.” He replied. He closed the album in his lap and leaned back in the taxi.
“You sounded funny there, Adam. Anyway, Ray called a few minutes ago. He’ll probably call your cell in a minute. He sounded off. Oh! Dad needs a new picture of you at the shop for the new edition.” Marina said. Adam felt himself smile.
“Okay, Mar.” he said. The cab pulled to a stop outside a large brown townhouse. Adam paid the driver and exited the cab, heading for the front door. He slid the photo album into the small bag on his arm and knocked.
“Hey Adam… I got another call. Love ya, babe.” Marina said as the door opened. A tall man with red hair that looked like an older version of the teenage boy in the picture stood there.
“Love ya too.” Adam said, closing his phone. He turned to the man in the door.
“Marina.” He said simply, as the man let him in.
“I figured as much. How’s the baby doing?” the man asked him as he closed the door. Adam laughed before he answered.
“She’s two, Ray.” Adam answered. The man grinned knowingly.
“Enough said. It’s been awhile now, Adam.” Ray said.
“I made detective—it’s the big time now. So, how’s bachelorhood treating you?” Adam asked.
“It’s lonely, Adam. Annie’s taking me to the premiere of some chick-flick in two weeks for our year anniversary. I’m going to propose to her then.” Ray admitted. Adam grinned.
“I’m taking Marina to see a movie then too. Called Darkness Points or something. Your mom’s babysitting Raya then.” Adam told her. Ray smiled.
“Mom told me. I think that’s the movie we’re seeing too.” Ray said. Adam nodded and took a beer out of Ray’s fridge.
“I’ve been thinking about the past lately, Ray. Thinking a lot.” Adam said before taking a long sip out of the glass bottle in his hand.
“What do you even mean, Adam?” Ray asked. Adam brought out his album to the picture of the two of them, Ray’s sister and their best friend.
“About Vi and Gin?” Ray asked. Adam nodded and the two settled into Ray’s couch.
“I miss them a lot lately, Ray. It’s feels like everything was being held back until now.” Adam said. Ray nodded knowingly.
“Do you think they’re okay?” Ray asked.
“I don’t know Ray… but I get the feeling that we’re about to find out.” Adam answered. Ray raised his eyebrow.
“Maybe.” Ray said, taking a cigarette from his pocket. Adam shook his head but let his friend light it anyway.
“Why haven’t you searched for Viola?” Ray asked after a moment. Adam looked at his best friend in surprise.
“I let her leave, Ray. I helped her make that decision to stay away. Why would I search for her?” Adam asked. Ray looked hurt.
“Because I loved her, Adam! Because I married her!” Ray burst out. Adam looked at Ray in shock.
“You married her?”

A young woman stood on the edge of the street, waiting for the light to flash ‘WALK’. Her hair, twisted into a shiny black tail, was bouncing as she tapped her foot. The light turned and she walked briskly across the street and into a building with an odd paint job. It was bright blue.
Her silver eyes flicked over her surroundings as she walked into an office marked ‘Marina Miller-Patterson, Editor.’ She sat at a sleek black desk and opened the newspaper she’d bought earlier.
After a moment she picked up the phone and dialed her husband’s number.
“Adam? It’s Marina. I found Ginny.”
