A/N: This started out as a challenge by a friend. I was astounded by how much each little story seemed to contain. I figure I'll do this until I'm tired of it.

The Conversation that Changed Everything

I keep replaying it over in my mind – the conversation that changed everything. Maybe I wasn’t prepared, or just too scared. I don’t know. And I can’t figure out why he even asked. Chad . My Chad . Actually, he wasn’t ever mine anywhere but in my head.

“I heard a rumor that you hate Sherrie because you like me. Is it true?” Those were his words. I swear my heart stopped.

“If that were true,” I returned, “why would I have told you that Sherrie was interested in you?”

It felt like a year while he stood there looking confused. “You did do that, didn’t you.” It wasn’t a question. I forced a smile and nodded, though I could barely breathe.

He left with her, never having answered my question. Of course, I know the answer -- sometimes love requires sacrifice. At least, I’ve always thought it was love.
