A Rescue
The soft patter of a young woman’s shoes echoed quietly off the sides of dimly lit buildings. Her blonde short hair bounced lightly off of her shoulders. She heard a sound above her head. Two figures jumped from the roof of a two story building with inhuman swiftness. They jumped from the first roof on to the one next to it about 7 feet away. As her jade eyes followed them, a smile came to her face. She was used to seeing vampires on the streets living like real people.
Long before she was born, human and vampires were great enemies. There was one vampire that was sick of all the fighting and killing. So he decided to make a truce. Eventually the truce was completed and the vampires and humans have been living together ever since. There were still some people on the earth, though that didn’t trust vampires and she knew they wanted the vampires to be eliminated.
She never felt in any real danger with vampires. They didn’t seem to have a great thirst for blood as they use to have. Some of her friends were even vampires.
She rounded a corner and walked up some steps of a large apartment building. The old oak door squeaked when she opened it. The lobby of the apartment was large and open. The cream tiled floor glowed softly from the dim lights above. Her eyes turned towards the desk on the side of the room. A man with short jet black hair was standing at the desk. He smiled at her and a pair of perfect white fangs revealed themselves to her. She smiled back without a word and quickly hurried to the elevator. As the 3rd floor button lit up, she thought she felt something brush against her shoulder. Nothing was there and the elevator doors opened. It stopped at the second floor and two people got on. They were both strikingly beautiful. One was a woman with waist length blonde hair and she was very tall. By her side was a man a little shorter than her. They were together. The woman looked at the girl.
“Hello dear,” she said with a smooth voice. “Beautiful night tonight isn’t it?” She smiled and another pair of fangs shined through.
“Very beautiful,” she responded. “The moon is full tonight.”
“Exactly, that’s why my husband and I are going out tonight. The moon is so much more peaceful than the sun.” The elevator doors opened up to the hallway of the third floor.
“It was nice to meet you dear.” The blonde lady called behind her.
“Yeah, you too.”
The hallway had a light brown carpet and light pink walls. It was all very calming. She approached a door. 312. It was her first time being on her own. The privacy she never had as a young woman was finally hers. It was different being away from her family. But she liked being on her own. It was a challenge. The door opened silently to a small room with one light on. She put her coat in the closet of her bedroom and went to the shower. After walking around in the cold, the warm water was a large welcome. After about 20 minutes she got out and wrapped a robe around her body. After she was dry, she put a pink sweater on. Looking over at the clock, she knew she only had about a half an hour to walk to her parent’s house for dinner.
Leaving a light on for when she got home, she closed the door quietly behind her.
A light wind brushed her cheek and she shivered from the cold, pulling her blue coat tighter around her. From around a corner, she heard a scream. It was a bone chilling scream that no human could make. Her steps stopped right there, her coat tighter than before. Not knowing if she should go see what the noise was about or not, she just stood there. About 5 minutes went by and she decided to go investigate. In the glow of a white street light, a man lay on the ground, his eyes open in horror looking at another man with a knife in his hand.
The girl stared from the boy on the ground to the one with the knife and back again. Both of their heads turned towards the girl.
“Get out of here,” said the man with the knife. “If you know what’s good for you.”
“What is this?” The girl asked. “Who is this?”
“I said get out of here!” screamed the man with the knife. “Can’t you see that this creature is a vampire?”
“Does that matter? There are thousands of them running around. Why are you focusing on this one?”
A smile came to the man’s bearded face. “Because this one I caught off guard.”
A scowl came to the girls face. “Leave him alone. I’m sure he did nothing to you.”
“This creature is walking our streets. That’s enough to kill him.”
She looked at the vampire. He was still on the ground, his eyes straight on the girls. With that stare, a little bit of courage shot through her body.
“No! That’s not enough!” she shouted at the man. “He did nothing to you! Leave him alone!”
The man’s small eyes stared at her. She met his gaze with a horrible scowl. He put down his knife.
“Fine, but if I see him walking on the streets again, he’s gone.” And with that, he walked away.
The girl walked over to the vampire on the ground. He just looked at her. Silenced filled the street. No one was there; it was a street that not very many people went on. She held out a hand to help him up.
A small whisper escaped his lips. “You…you would help me?” His voice was deep and clear. It reminded the girl of the clear smoothness of silk. She stepped back, surprised of the loveliness of his voice. When she gathered herself together, she answered. “Of course I would. To me there is no difference between vampires and humans.”
He grasped her hand. His skin was smooth but cold. Out of surprise, her hand recoiled, but she put it back in his. Once he was on his feet, she got a good look at his face. But before she did, she backed out of the glow of the streetlight. With him still standing in there in the glow, he looked like an angel. His head turned to her and he started slowly walking forward. There was about two feet between them and she had the chance to study his face. His argent hair went down to the middle of his back. Points of ears stuck out from beneath the hair. Everything about him was perfect. From his perfectly symmetrical lips to the precise shape of his nose, everything seemed unreal. The thing that caught her attention most, though, was his eyes. They were an amethyst color; very bright. When he looked at her with those perfect eyes, she felt weak in the legs. She could feel them start to buckle and she started to fall down. Strong arms caught her and lifted her back up.
“Please don’t fall over,” he said, trying to suppress a laugh.
“Sorry, I don’t know why I did.” She looked up at him. A smile was on his face. That made her melt even more.
Once she was upright, he leaned closer to her face.
“What’s your name?” He asked.
She looked up at him. “Echo,” She said. “My mother liked that word, so she named me after it.”
“That’s a very pretty name. My name is Kuolema.”
“I’ve never heard of that word or name before.”
Another melting smile came to his perfect lips. “It means “death” in Finnish. I don’t know why that’s my name.” He laughed a deep rich laugh and once again, she felt her legs giving out.
He has such an effect on me…He’s beautiful. But surely he doesn’t think the same way about me.
She felt his large hand on her shoulder. “I insist I pay you back somehow. Why don’t you come over to my place?”
“I would really love to, but I have to meet my family for dinner and I’ll never get there in time now. They live about 20 minutes from here. I’m already late.
He leaned his head close to hers. “Then at least let me take you there.”
She felt his hand slip into hers and he lifted her up onto his back.
“This may creep you out a little,” he said to her. “But it’s nothing bad.”
Around where each of his shoulder blades were located, two wings sprouted up. With a big push, they were in the air. Another large pump of his wings made them speed forward. Echo had to hold on for her life, the land speeding past them. In about 5 minutes, they were at the doorstep of her parent’s house. He held one of her hands and let her slide off of his back.
She looked back at him with a smile on her face “Thank you.” He smiled back.
Echo turned around to look at her door, and turned back to see that he was gone. With sadness inside her, she opened the door and went in for dinner.
If anyone (for any stupid reason) isn't comfortable with me making his name Kuolema.. too bad, I'm not changing it.
Ummm well that's all I can think of right now... soooooo ya. Enjoy. AND if anyone has any suggestions for improvement, please don't hesitate to say : )
