Ironic
‘I look down at your closed eyes. You look so peaceful, but it scares me that you won’t wake up. I’m so sorry. Please… forgive me.’
The young boy gently placed a hand on hers. He shut his eyes and trembled.
“I can’t lose you. Please, don’t go!” He left her side for just a moment to close the door, muting the hospital noises outside. It was deathly quiet except for the soft pattering of the rain against the window. He quickly returned to her side, placing his hand back where it was before.
“I just don’t want to see you gone. Not like this. I’m sorry. If you can hear me, just show me you can!” he pleaded. He stared anxiously at her silent face.
But nothing happened. He laid his head down on the bed she was lying on, and shut his eyes.
‘It’s all my fault. Why did this have to happen? Why can’t I take your pain away?’
Flashback
“What’s wrong with you?!” she screamed, her face flustered and teary.
“Hey, just leave me the hell alone! You know what actually? Get the hell out of my apartment! You can go and live with that guy now!” he yelled back. She gasped and held her breathe.
“You weren’t always like this… why?” she choked. She bit her lower lip, turned and ran out the door, slamming it closed. The man muttered a few words, grabbed a glass bottle, and hurled it at the closed door. The shattering noise resonated in the apartment as he stared out the window.
‘I just wanted her to stay away from him. But she just wanted to be around that guy!’ he thought angrily. But why was he jealous… it was just her friend.
He sighed deeply and slowly came to realize he couldn’t be mad at her and that it was all his fault they were fighting. He turned around and ran after her.
“Rose! Rose, where are you?!” he called until he reached the ground floor. He looked around and spotted her at the front entrance.
“Rose!” he called, running up to her. She glanced around. Her face froze, and she ran the other direction, not watching as she entered the busy street.
“Rose! I-“
But it was too late. There was a menacing screech of the tires and the world became deafeningly silent. His heart stopped when he heard her cry, but he kept running. He bent down towards Rose, her body motionless, bloody and laying on the hard concrete.
“Rose! Please Rose, be alright! Rose!” he cried, tears urging to fall from his frightened eyes. “Damn it! Help! Anybody!” But no one stopped to help. They watched in horror, but no one dared to help.
He lifted her up in his arms and began laboriously carrying her to the nearby hospital. He cringed as her blood flowed in his hands while he carried her to the hospital. The sky above was dark and the rain began pelting down on them.
He kicked the entrance open and everyone gasped in shock from the sudden noise. He stood there at the entrance, panting and soaking wet.
“Someone help her!” he pleaded with a hoarse voice, falling to his knees. Doctors rushed over and lifted Rose into a wheelchair while others helped the man up. He struggled against them as he saw Rose being wheeled away from him.
“No! I have to go with her!” he protested, continuing to pull against the doctors’ grip. “I have to tell her I’m-“
“You can’t!” hey interrupted. The man never stopped struggling until he could no longer see the girl. He was pushed into a chair and he gave up. He dropped his head and buried them in his bloody hands.
“You don’t understand,” he choked, his voice barely audible. “I have to tell her…”
End of Flashback
“Rose…please don’t die…” he whispered, opening his eyes. But his only answer was the slow beeping of the heart monitor. He lifted his head up to look at her sleeping face once again.
“If you can hear me, please…please just show me,” he pleaded again. Then, he felt a slight grip on his hand. He looked down and saw her hand holding his. He glanced at her face again with tearful eyes as her own eyes opened just enough for him to see their color.
“Rose!” he nearly cried. She weakly smiled and uttered a few words.
“I’m…sorry that… I…” she said. But she stopped. And then… she was gone. Her eyes closed, her face dropped, and her grip died away.
“No…. Rose…” he whispered as the heart monitor rang its single, solid note. He slowly moved towards her and embraced her, tears running down his face. His entire body trembled and he cried.
“I’m the one that’s sorry… and… I love you…” he ushered out. But his reply was silence as the rain stopped and the sun came out from behind the gray clouds.
Not much to note about, except that I wrote this out of pure needing to write. Also spur of the moment. I couldn't even think of a proper title. The only real reason I'm even posting it on this site is because my friend wouldn't stop bothering me about it, and said that it was "really good!" Psh. If you read my other one shot, I bet you can guess it's the same friend. I hope you liked it, and please review. Flames will be ignored. Constructive criticism will be taken into thought. Compliments will be appreciated.
