Sweet Sedation

The rhythm of her breath, soft and hollow, would have been enough, really. He needed nothing more than that. He used to dream of falling asleep to her sleepy song, sweetly serenaded into a euphoric impasse. Sweet sedation.

Full moon sways…gently in the night of one fine day…”

Frankly, even after all these years, it still eluded him how she could sing in her sleep—or even why, for that matter. Nevertheless, it was enchanting. The milky moonlight caressing her tranquil face, illuminating every soft feature. It was more than he needed, and he was still in awe, captivated.

Oh my way…Looking for a moment with my dear…”

She was smiling, really. Secretly. He smiled back.

Maybe she wasn’t really sleeping, after all. She probably wasn’t, he admitted, searching for a sign of obscured consciousness. But when he hovered over her, beaming, and softly whispered in her ear…she never responded.

I love you. He gazed at her complacently, searching for any sign of recognition, any gesture in return. Then suddenly, at a loss of a response, he felt utterly robbed.

She must be sleeping. At least, he hoped she was. Perhaps his fleeting words failed to transcend the buffer between reality and dreams, falling limply to the ground without so much as an echo of resonance.

That was it, they just hadn’t reached her. That was it, she just didn’t know.

He tightly embraced her, gazing at her tranquil expression. I love you.

He laced his fingers through hers, entwined in a loving embrace. Three words.

He laid his head to rest against hers, fingering the soft tresses of auburn hair. Just words.

He gently kissed her cheek, which was surprisingly warm under his breath. After all, he breathed, just words.

He felt her stir slightly under his embrace, “Resting in my arms after all these years..” her voice trailed along.

“Keira?” he asked.

“Hm?” She breathed, adjusting herself in his arms.

“Do you love me?”

Her eyes fluttered to wake. She gently opened her eyes, gazing at him warmly. “I thought you knew, I’ve been singing it to you all along.” Her cheeks flushed a little as she lowered her head in embarrassment. “I thought it was romantic,” she admitted.

He just stared at her blankly. Then, tenderly, he pulled her close to him. She tucked her head gently under his neck, warming him with the rhythm of her breath.

You were there,” his voice trailed softly, filling the heart of the room. “Smiling in my arms for all those years…”

A/N: hehe just a little ramble written on a late Friday night. My first one-shot, nothing too serious. The song lyrics in are from “Moon on the Water” by Beat Crusaders.
