It was a cold winter morning, and a layer of snow blanketed everything. Not a trace of any other color could be seen, and not a sound could be heard except for the soft crunching of the snow caused by the walking of feet.

‘She’s so beautiful… ‘ thought the young man as he walked alongside a girl. He watched her as she stepped along lightly and happily, barely making a footprint on the snow. She had a smile on her face and her cheeks were a reddish tinge from the biting cold. He only thought that made her look cuter.

“Ah! I love winter so much!” she exclaimed, throwing her arms in the air as if to embrace everything. “It’s so beautiful!”

“Yes. It is very beautiful, just like you are,” he added, smiling at her. The red tinge on her cheeks grew a deeper shade of it, and she shyly rubbed the back of her head. He chuckled.

‘Same old Jill,’ he thought, thinking of the times he’s known her. ‘Always so shy and naïve.’ She held out a hand to him and he stared at her a moment, caught off guard.

“Don’t just stand there silly! Let’s go!” she said. He grinned slightly, grabbed her hand, and then the two of them were walking down the once graveled trail of a once flourishing green field. They had walked for a long while, the both of them in silence, and decided to rest by a barren tree they spotted. Both of them leaned against the cold and hard trunk, but neither cared.

‘Jill… I want to tell you so much how I love you… but… I’m a coward… why can’t I just say “Jill, I love you”?’ he thought. The man sighed and a cloud of fog emerged from his warm breath, disappearing with the air.

“This is nice. I’m going to miss being here with you, Derrick,” she said idly. He looked up in attention and turned to her.

“What? What are you talking about, Jill?” he asked, trying to hide his frantic feelings.

“I didn’t tell you? I’m moving away to Italy with my father at the end of winter. I thought I had told you already. Is there something wrong Derrick?” she asked, tilting her head towards him. But he didn’t answer. This was all so sudden to him. Moving to Italy? How was he ever going to see her anymore?

“We’ll always keep in touch,” she continued. “We can always call each other, writer letters-“

“Jill. I… I don’t want you to leave,” he said, looking right into her bright blue eyes. “I want you to stay here… with me…” The girl was speechless, and smiled at him.

“I want to stay with you too, but there’s nothing I can really do now. My father had already made all the-“

“No! You don’t understand Jill!”

“Understand what?”

“I want you to stay because… I love you!” He had unexpectedly yelled it, and she jumped back a little in response. She was staring at him with widened eyes, strands of her brownish blonde hair falling in front of her face.

“Derrick… w-what are you talking about?” she stuttered. "You're scaring me." He took a few steps toward her and gently grabbed her arms with his hands.

“I love you, Jill. I love you with all my heart. I’ve always felt this way ever since I first met you that day in our first year of high school. It was love at first sight! Please, don’t leave to Italy. I need you; I’ll do anything for you! Just don’t leave me!" His hands were shaking, and she stared at him with frightened eyes. Her mouth was half open, her lips quivering, and she looked away from him, closing her eyes. A tear rolled down her cheek and she shook away from him, trembling. He stood there, frozen with his hands extended out towards her.

“Derrick… I really like you, but only as a friend… please don’t make this any harder than it already is…” she whispered.

“It doesn’t have to be hard! Just don’t go and stay here with me!” he exclaimed, starting towards her again. But she quickly stepped away, pulling her hands towards her chest. “I love you!”

“No… I’m going. I don’t… want to see you anymore! Go away!” she screamed, turning and running away from him. He held out his arm and whispered, “Jill… please don’t go…” But she didn’t stop. She kept running until he could no longer see her. He collapsed to the snow on the ground and fell to his hands.

“I told you all my heart… I love you… why don’t you love me…?” he asked. But his answer was silence as he felt the wind silently blow against him.

Author Notes

So soap opera-y. I need to lighten up a bit... Ah well. What will be, will be.

I wrote this one not too long ago, just didn't think to post it. This story was inspired by a song I'm singing in my choir called, "Never Seek To Tell Thy Love", so the title came from the song. Hence, it is not mine. The title is Copyrighted to Porterfield (there was only 1 name written). I hope you liked it, and please review. Flames will be ignored. Constructive criticism will be taken into thought. Compliments will be appreciated.
