Chapter One

The First Day

Words covered the hall of the small run down house. Two woman stood in the hall talking; one was a police officer, the other a mother. "If it means anything, anything that might help out then perhaps we will have some idea of who to track down." The mother looked as if she was going to die of embarrassment of her house, the walls covered with permanent marker. "Until then, heres the police station's number, my personal desk number, and my cell and home phone number." The woman gave the mother a worried look, in this small town every one knew eachother. "Take care of Karol will you?"

"Thank you Joanna," the mother said. The police officer smiles worried about the girl whose room was shut and locked. There were scratches up and down the door from Joanna and the mother's attempt at opening the door. "I'll call if anything changes." She said her voice lowered to avoid Karol hearing what they were saying.

"Good, I'll see you later Nancy, take care of yourself, and her." Joanna glanced at Karol's door one last time before turning around and walking down the steps in the trooper steps that were characteristic of her. Nancy closed the door as fast as she could in fear someone might break in and turned to take in the permanent marker streaks.

"Karol..." she whispered tears already making their way down her cheeks. She walked to the door and knocked, "Karol...please open the door. I don't want to have you stay in there all by yourself." Nancy could hear Karol's whimpers behind the door and the sound of her rocking herself back and forth. "I'm going to check on you in ten minutes." Her mother announced.

Karol looked up at the door in fear as she heard her mother walk away. Her hands were shaking, covered in the same permanent marker as the walls. Demon, vampire, death, and blood covered her hands in so many terms and scribbles. She whimpered as she heard the front door open, "mother..."

"What did I do to deserve a daughter that never finished her Art homework?" Nancy joked as her daughter sat at the kitchen table working on the last paragraph of her summer homework before her first year of high school. Nancy was sipping coffee as she glanced over Karol's shoulder. It was an essay for her first class of drawing so that she didn't have to take introduction to art. It was all about line and contrast, but her heart wasn't in it.

Karol looked at her Mother's smiling face before glancing back at the last paragraph. She still hadn't put her make-up on nor brushed her hair, but she had to finish the last paragraph. She had put it off all summer and now she was paying. "I don't know, perhaps you never let me attend art camp so I never got my score of good work." Her mother laughed as if it were all true, but shook her head.

"Finish up or else you won't get into that bathroom." No sooner did the words leave her mother's mouth did Karol scrawl something at the bottom of the essay and slam the notebook shut.

"All done!" She screamed before racing past her slow mother into the bathroom. Before her mother reached the bathroom Karol had already brushed her hair. She didn't need make-up, she had natural beauty, no make-up required, but she had the feel that she needed to add make-up. She began to apply foundation when her mother had grabbed her and pulled her out of the bathroom by her arm.

"You need to try," her mother complained, but rubbed Karol's foundation in so it was smooth. "Come on, finish up and if you're lucky I'll let you back into the bathroom." She said. Karol frowned a little upset, but sat back down and opened the notebook. She finished up the paragraph, but had no time to get to her makeup before her mother was rushing her out to the car.

"Mom!" Karol complained now really ticked off, but as her mother started the car and backed out of the driveway a black jaguar sped by nearly hitting the car. The engine sputtered and stalled as Karol watched the jaguar speed down the street and not even stop at the stop sign, un harmed.

"Damn car!" Her mother yelled, but she wasn't quite sure which car she meant.
