I had to wear a gown

The doctor walked in within 10 minutes, ready to explain everything to us.

“The procedure shouldn’t take long, what they are going to do is put your bone back into place, and then put a cast over it, so you don’t have to have any cement, or plates in your arm. You will be asleep the whole time, when you wake up, you will probably feel soar, and dizzy, and you might suffer from temporary amnesia. If everything goes accordingly, you will be home by Saturday.” He explained all in one go.

“Saturday?!” I shrieked. He nodded.

“You’ll be out of school for a while as well.” He added. I nodded.

“After you put your gown on, just lay on the bed, and the nurses will be here shortly.” He wished me good luck, and told me he would see me when I wake up. I walked over to the bathroom, keeping my pants on, and only taking off my shirt and putting the gown over myself. I walked out and jumped on the bed lying down. Mr. La Morte stood beside me running his hand over the top of my head. And then the nurse walked in.

“Ok, so you can either go home, or you can spend the night in the waiting room, because you’ll only be able to visit her tomorrow.” The nurse said to Mr. La Morte. I looked up at him, waiting for his answer, I didn’t mind what he was going to decide, but at this point I was scared and didn’t want to be alone. He turned to me and took my hand in his, he was leaning over me.

“Do you want me to be here with you?” he asked. I wanted cry yes, but I knew he had things to do, and he had to take care of Jack as well.

“It’s ok…I’ll…I’ll be fine.” I lied. He smirked a little. He leaned over me and kissed my forehead.

I almost died.

I felt my face go red, hoping he didn’t notice.

“I’ll be back Dev…” he said, and left. Another nurse came in, and helped the first nurse pull the stretcher to the surgery room, or what ever it’s called. It was a bright white room; I tried not to look at the small metal tables with silver tools on them. There were four surgeons in the room, although I couldn’t see there faces because of their masks, and hair nets. It didn’t take them long for them all to get set up, so within fifteen minutes, one of the surgeons came up to me and dabbed a cotton ball, with alcohol on it, on my good arm.

“You’ll just feel a little pinch.” She said. I felt a small pain on my arm, looking over to see a needle in my arm.

I started to feel light headed and drowsy. I started to think about Mr. La Morte, and when he kissed me. It didn’t even bother me that I was going into surgery anymore, it only scared me that I might be delirious when I wake up. And so without even knowing it…

I fell asleep.

I awoke in a dark room. Where am I? My head felt so heavy, and it was throbbing in pain. My left arm was worse, I couldn’t even move it. I looked around and saw a window and a TV and that’s it, but I looked closer and saw that there was someone sitting in a chair next to me. Although I wasn’t sure who it was or if it was awake.

I was freezing.

I shivered, looking down to see that there was only a thin blanket covering my legs. I felt a warm hand stroke my cheek. I realized that the figure was standing by the bed now. Although, I didn’t know what was going on, I was scared of who this stranger was. I quivered in fear, and in cold. I felt two sheets fall over me…I didn’t know exactly what they were, but I had felt warmer. I squirmed a little, trying to remember what was going on. I wanted to talk, but I didn’t find the strength to open my mouth, so with that…I fell back asleep.

I heard voices.

My whole body ached…and I felt as if everything was in slow motion, even though my eyes were shut. I felt weak, and as if I couldn’t move. I slowly opened my eyes to a bright white room, only realizing that I was in a hospital. I lifter my right arm, rubbing my eyes. My left arm was in pain though, I was unable to move my fingers the slightest bit.

“Ahh, well I see she is waking up.” I heard a familiar voice say. I noticed that I wasn’t lying flat on my back; my upper body was up on the mechanic bed. So when I opened my eyes, I was looking through a person’s point of view of standing. I saw a doctor standing there, the same doctor I had seen before the surgery….that’s right, I had just woken up from the surgery. I looked over to my right to see Mr. La Morte sitting beside me.

“How are you feeling?” the doctor asked.

“Terrible.” I said softly with a straight face. He smiled.

“Well, I’m sure you’ll be glad to hear that everything went fine, your bone is in place, we put the cast on it, and everything’s good.” He explained. I nodded, yawning.

“So I have good news and bad news.” He said. I was too tired to even care.

“You have the choice of going home today, which is the good news, the bad news is, you’ll be out of school for a week, you’ll also be out of physical activities for four months. Maybe before if it looks good enough.” I nodded.

“Ok well then, I’m going to fill out some passes for school, and you can discuss whether you want to go home or not today.” He said, and left. I looked over at Mr. La Morte who looked like he’d been up all night.

“Didn’t get much sleep last night?” I asked him lightly. He smirked a little.

“Well, after ten minutes of going home, I couldn’t sleep, so I came back, I was in your room all night. Plus, I’m not sure if you remember, but you didn’t get much sleep either.” He explained sitting up. I thought back, and realized that I had woken up in the middle of the night a lot.

“I want to go home…” I said.

“Don’t force yourself, if you’re too weak, stay here, if you feel you can…” I wasn’t sure if he wanted me to stay, or to come home with him.

“I really want to go.” I said, slowly pulling the covers off me. He chuckled and laid a hand on my shoulder.

“Well you have to wait a while before you go anywhere.” He said. The doctor came back in, which was prefect timing. He handed Mr. La Morte a couple of light pink slips which were my passes.

“So, when you go to school on Monday, just give this to the nurse so that they know she’ll be out for a week.” He explained.

“Ok, now do you recommend any medicine for pain?” he asked, sliding it in his pocket.

“Nope, Tylenol, Advil, off the counter medicines.” The doctor explained. He turned to me.

“Now, here are the rules. No running, or doing any physical activity what so ever, where your sling when you are outside of the house, try not sleeping on your arm, drink lots of milk, and rest a lot. You are probably going to suffer from some after-affects of the surgery, which is nausea, being very tired, and clumsy, and you might feel like you don’t want to eat, but you have too.” I nodded, upset about how strict it was. Although I was very surprised they were letting me go so early. Especially after having surgery, but it wasn’t like I couldn’t walk.

“So when you’re all ready, just go to the desk over there to sign out, and I hope you feel better.” He said, and shook Mr. La Morte’s hand before he left.

“Where’s my shirt?” I asked him. He handed me his college sweatshirt.

“I took it home, I brought this instead because it’s snowing out.” He explained standing up.

“Take the scrub off.” He said. I looked at him strangely.

“Here? Right now? In front of you?” I asked. He nodded.

“Don’t worry about it.” He said. I removed the sling, taking my shirt off; thank god I had a bra and tank top on. I put the sling back on, and let him pull the sweatshirt over my head. Before I got off the bed, he gently raised my chin, staring me with eyes of concern.

“Oh Dev, what am I going to do with you?” he smirked, and let me go. I stood up, slowly, but sat back down and rubbed my head, feeling dizzy.

“Here.” I felt him slip my shoes on my feet. “Hold onto me ok?” He pulled me up, and I wrapped my good arm around his left arm.

We started walking slowly down the bright white halls of the hospital to get to the parking lot. I had to stop a couple times because of how dizzy I was, I felt like everything around me was spinning. He told me to lay in the back seat, and not to open my eyes. I did as he told me to. Before I knew it…I was asleep.
