The Brotherhood of Elite Slayers

In this day and age, vampires still exist. They live among us without our knowledge, even if they’re exposed no one lives to tell it. It was a cold night as I watched the city from the building, the sky was lit in orange and red colors evening was donning.

Vampires were said to be a myth, but they were wrong. The reality is vampires live among the mortals and strike at darkness. How do I know?

Because I’m the one hunting them.

My name is Damien III, I leave it like that because my real name is Damien Van Helsing III. I am the grandson of Victor Van Helsing, it was hard to believe it at first, until I witness a slaying with my own eyes. This man (at least I thought was a man) had murdered people, by sucking their blood. I thought he was crazy until he attacked me biting on my neck. It caused me great pain I felt almost dizzy until, I took the dagger on his buckle and stabbed him. I was a police officer back then investigating brutal murders like the one I witnessed, but something wasn’t right. I stabbed him, instead of dying, he grabbed a cup of blood from his wound and feasted on it. He wasn’t human, I didn’t know what he was. Scared for my life I ran clasping onto my bitten neck, it didn’t matter to him. My sight went blur covered in blood red, staggering to escape I felt dizzy and weak until I passed out on the street.

I was sure I was going to die, I saw him approach me closer and closer he placed his hand on my bite mark ready to have his fill until, a stranger in a dark overcoat intervened. I had no idea who he was, but he carried a sword shaped like a cross and flashed it to the thing it fell back scared but with malice.

That’s when I witnessed it, he thrust the sword into the man’s heart as he decayed into ashes. I couldn’t talk and move, that’s when everything went dark. I woke up inside some sort of emergency room where people operated on me they sowed up my bite mark and left me to rest.

When I woke up the chief of my precinct was the first person I saw. I tried to explain what happened but he didn’t believe me they found the corpse torched to death. They had no evidence on me or against me so I was relieved of active duty. Everything felt like a dream to me had I really faced a vampire? I didn’t know until I met the man who had saved me at my apartment.

He told me everything about vampires, I thought he was crazy at first but it made sense. He wanted me to join a cult at least that was what it felt like, that I should be hunting vampires, what was more crazy was when he told me about my family history. I knew nothing about my ancestors or who I descended from, all I knew was my father was killed by an unknown assailant. It soon came clear to me that I was a descendant of Van Helsing a vampire hunter.

The man trained me how to kill a vampire and everything I needed to know about them. He gave me the weapons I needed, silver bullets and arrows, daylight or any bright light, a stake and garlic. It didn’t take long until I started crafting weapons out of silver and wood. My first kill was at a night club, it was the perfect place for night stalkers to roam, the smell of alcohol filled the air and everyone who was drunk was vulnerable. My first target was a female vampire who lured a drunk male for a little “party” I scouted the two of them and made it just in time. I was armed with a silver blade, when I revealed myself to her. Her eyes were dead blue with her fangs revealed, ready to strike me, I jumped back and placed the cold steel on her perfect pale neck. The man stood there confused I didn’t want him to see this I didn’t want anyone to see it.

“Run.” I told him, he was frozen still. “RUN!!” I ordered him he ran as fast as he could. A temptation in me didn’t want to kill her but she would kill me without hesitation, a quick slice on the neck and she was dead. It didn’t take long before police heard about the slaughter. The first time I killed I was a little shaken, I felt like a monster myself, did she deserve to die? Was the question that blurred in my head I knew the ways of vampires well enough that they won’t hesitate yet some were new breeds they were transformed not born that way they were scared and confused.

I became very religious, begging for forgiveness of what I had done, I couldn’t say it was the will of God, murder was not of God. I started placing a cross on my neck symbol of purity. If I killed I hope God could understand.

Here I was watching the city, I was a loner, it was better this way no one got involved in my new work of vigilance, I couldn’t show emotions or it’ll kill me. I watched as the night took full form the red orange sky turned indigo black. It was time, time to feast upon lives but I wasn’t going to allow that.

A woman, clearly in her late 20's with her raven dark hair moved quickly. I didn’t know who she was or what she was trying to avoid but I decided to keep a close eye on her. Her eyes were sky blue her skin was gothic pale, she was scared of something or someone. She rushed her way into a dark alley, it wasn’t a smart move for her. Thugs and hoods hang around there I decided to be her guardian angel for the night.

As I watched her, she stumbled onto a hoods hangout, I hoped they would let her go but I was wrong.

“Hey lady, you’re lost?” asked one of the thugs.

“Please I just want to go.” she pleaded.

“What’s the rush we can have a little fun.” said another one this time bringing out a pocket knife.

“Please just leave me alone.” she said moving backwards until she was cornered.

“Be nice to us and we’ll be nice to you.” said the third thug now grinning.

Her eyes were filled with fear, I couldn’t let them do anything to her, they may not be vampires but they’re still trouble. I didn’t need any weapons I could take them on easily. I jumped out of my hiding place facing the thugs.

“Leave her alone.” I roared. The thugs just charged at me, fools. One swung a knife near me I just broke his arm just like that. Another one brought a baseball bat. I dodge every swing, catching the next one and smashed his head with it. The third one brought out a gun.

“Look out!” she screamed. From nowhere she jumped on him and bit his neck sucking his blood as the man cried out in pain. I saw her kill the man, I realized she was a vampire. I revealed my blade at her, she scampered back fear in her eyes, I knew she was a new blood.

“Please, I didn’t mean to.” she said cornering herself. “I didn’t want to, I just want to be left alone.” she cried. My hand froze at her position. I had to kill her, but she saved my life. The decision was running through my mind my heart beating faster and faster. She wasn’t going to attack me, she wouldn’t attack me. Her eyes narrowed on the blade feeling helpless.

“I’m sorry.” I said as I closed my eyes ready to swing my sword at her neck.

She cried out.

“Behind you!” I turned around to face a breed of vampires but they didn’t look like the human ones they were more like beasts forms.

I never faced anything like them before, but believe it they were a blessing in disguise. I focused on them than on the girl. They struck at me, I used my blade to slash one at the back, the other was stabbed in the chest as it fell and turned to its human form. The third took me by surprise, as it slashed my hand with the sword making me drop it. It darted for me, I threw it over me landing on its four legs attempting another attack on me. I ran for my sword as the beast came closer towards me, with a second I snatched the sword and sliced off its right arm. It howled at me projecting a growl with foam from its mouth. It ran away from me, I couldn’t catch it in time. Leaving me to focus on the girl but she was gone, she made the right move. I couldn’t kill her it would have been heartless of me, but she was bitten what was I supposed to do? There was no way I could reverse it nor did I have any knowledge about it. Even if I was turning, I had no alternative for myself. I heard sirens getting louder and louder, they were approaching this street I had to escape before they found me, I climbed the fence to get to the building tops again. My work was done for tonight anyway...
