I have never seen the sun rise or set
Until today.

The glory of a waking sun stretching its rays—
Or the sweet soft goodbye it makes as it sinks past the horizon—

I have never known this
Until I took the time,
And sat, and watched, and saw,
And—

I saw that when it rises
It rises slowly, bringing a lullaby
From the other side of the world.
And its light is the glow of a thousand lit candles,
Its warm touch so soothing against the night.

And when it sets
It sets slowly, singing a goodnight to the Earth,
Readying it for a night of slumber.
And its leaving presence is maddening, and sad,
But the bright colors and the soft slow haze in the sky say,

I love you, and will be gone only the night:
Sleep, and when you awake I will be here.

I had never seen the sun rise or set.
Until today
When I saw its hello
And its good-bye.
