AN I wrote this as the second in a series of My stories. Unfortunately the first has yet to be typed. Nothin much else to say, lemme know what you think.

My Unseen Goodbye

The cold enveloped. His body had long gone numb from the freezing temperatures. He gasped, pulling cool air into his deprived lungs, groaning as a searing pain shot through his broken ribs.

All he wanted was peace. He had longed for the fighting to stop. And where had it gotten him? Now he was here, beaten and bloodied in this cave, praying to any hope that he’d be found before the tide came in.

He could feel the blood from his nose, running a warm trail down his cheek to pool on the ground. His leg burned as warm blood forced it’s way through the cold.

The edges of his vision were slowly clouding, black filling his eyesight. Everything was blurry; features of the cave all meshed into one large shadow. With every moment that passed he sank further into darkness.

Suddenly it was warm, light flooded the room. Comforting arms were secured around his waist, a soft breath fluttering on his neck.

Looking around he was back in his apartment, the plush pink carpet pillowing under his bare feet. The TV was running an episode of I Love Lucy, the volume turned low. A lawn mower could be heard out the open window.

A soft sigh brought his eyes to his shoulder. There – blond hair contrasting gracefully with his black shirt – was an angel.

“What happened?” it was a whisper, as he was reluctant to break the slow, peaceful atmosphere, but it had an effect just the same.

“Hmm?” the beauty next to him snuggled closer, closed eyes denying that any sound had come from her parted lips.

“It’s nothing, Kate.” The girl opened her eyes, bright blue meeting dark brown with a content smile.

“Okay.” She stretched in her place, squeezing his middle tightly. “I’m hungry.” She slipped from his arms, rising from the couch and making her way to the kitchen.

He stood as she disappeared from sight, padding softly to the window. A bird flew from a nearby tree as he leaned on the ‘sill, taking in a deep breath of warm, spring air. That brought him back.

How had he gotten here? Wasn’t he just…where had he been? He could vaguely remember being in pain, but how had he gotten hurt? Why had he been cold? And why couldn’t he remember?

“Melon?” He turned from the window to see Kate emerging from the kitchen, a bowl of melon in her soft hands. He smiled, forgetting his mystery as he stepped foreword, reaching for the bowl.

His legs wouldn’t move.

His arm froze inches from his body.

A cold chill seeped into his back.

The cave was dark; the sun’s rays no longer penetrating the impending gloom. Seawater crept nearer, already having covered the entire cave floor.

He shivered, feeling the freezing water through the dull numbness. Had he fallen asleep?

Kate…

He’d never see her again.

Never glimpse her sweet smile.

Never hold her close…

And tell her he loved her…

He’d never get to say goodbye.

It was then, as the water rushed steadily deeper

And the cold grew steadily more frightening.

And as darkness engulfed his vision for the last time,

That he said his last word

That he whispered his last desperate plea.

Goodbye
