History

Today I am ugly

With my cracked teeth

And cigarettes

I have a scar down my back

And a wild silhouette

-

Tomorrow I will be beautiful

With a shaven head

And smile

I have dimples on my cheeks

And an appetite for guile

-

Yesterday I was green

With apples dangling

From my arms

My feet are rooted in one place

But I am not alarmed

-

But next week I might be scarlet

With bangles swinging

From my wrists

My hips are swaying dangerously

But please look—I insist.
