There He Was

There he was,

Motionless on the table before her,

Looking as if he was only asleep.

She moved closer,

Wanting to touch him,

Yet somehow terrified of what it would be like.

She could feel the tears,

Forming in her eyes,

This was finally it.

It hit her he would never smile at her again,

She suddenly felt all her muscles turn to Jell-O,

Her hands clammy and cold.

She stepped towards him,

Cautiously took his hand in her own,

Shocked at the warmth it still held.

She tried to swallow,

To fight back the tears she felt coming,

But it was useless.

She let out a sob,

A horribly pain-filled sound,

And she knew her heart was broken.

The tears flowed freely,

She didn’t care who saw,

The love of her life was gone.

It wasn’t fair,

His life was stolen away so young,

And because of someone else’s mistake.

It just didn’t seem right,

That he would die,

While the drunk driver was fine.

It seemed that Justice was gone,

The innocent were punished,

While the evil were left alone.

So she stayed by his side for hours,

His hands went cold but she felt no less heart-broken,

And no less alone.

Finally someone had to drag her away,

Surrounded her with friends and family,

But she knew she would forever be alone.
