A Farewell A Little Too Late
Disclaimer: I do not own the lyrics to “Our Friend Lazarus Sleeps” by I Am Ghost. They inspired the story. Chapter. Whatever you want to call this.
“Our friend Lazarus sleeps.
Her lips shake with every, with every word.
You were my favorite.
We both know our love will never end.
Conform me in, into the wicked…
Into the lonely mass grave four legged dancers.”
She still clutched the black envelope as she wandered through the graveyard, looking for the newest tombstone. He followed her with a half interested gaze, his hat in his hands. When she reached the last one, she fell to her knees, tears forming behind her eyes.
“Our Friend Lazarus Sleeps”
She read it in a whisper. Her muscles seized up and she dropped her head to look at the envelope in her hands.
“He really is dead,” she muttered, “I thought…maybe,”
“Against hope, you should not hope,” he said solemnly. He was standing behind her now, a blank look on his face, his true feelings indiscernible.
“You were my favorite,” she said, to the grave now, “We both know our love will never end.” Her lips shook with every word, her voice quavered, she showed every sign of crying, but no tears came. She gently laid the black envelope against his tombstone and looked at the words one last time. As long as she lived, she would never forget them.
“Now I am conformed into a lonely mass grave four legged dancer,” she quipped, “Damned forever, or at least until I die.” She was up on her feet, now turned to face him.
“Forever,” he repeated, smiling a little. “I am sorry.”
She walked forward a put her hands in his. His hat dropped to the ground, forgotten. The silver in his eyes shone iridescently in the dim moonlight.
“You should not be so close,” he said, the effort of refraining himself evident in his features.
“Do it,” she said. He kept his eyes fixed on hers, and she could see the hunger in them. “Do it!”
“There is nothing left for you?” He was stalling. Her touch was too much. He could hear her heartbeat in his ears now.
“Only you,” she answered. He didn’t want to do this to her.
“Are you…”
“Just do it!”
“The bite was ugly as sin.” (another lyric from the song.)
