Aiding Pain, Food for Thought

Within the wanting to become pain free
Is the craving to be numb,
Intoxication, starvation, to just be high,
We're altering that mirror image
Of our insides-out
Wanting to break free of our mold
Of our reality that holds us back
Precious thoughts of Don'ts are forgotten
As we take another drink, pill or puff
Trying to get away temporarily
While we're unable to cope
Not realizing that we're only putting on
A bandage
To a deep slash
Needing stitches
To heal itself whole.
