Chapter 1; The Criminals

He was always there for me. I’ve grown to learn this over the years. Now he’s leaving. I began to cry. Why? Why must he go? I could never imagine a life with out him. We knew each other since we were teens, and now this.

“Well, I’m off,” he said. I looked at Sawyer’s khaki pants, then up to his buttoned red shirt on to his face. His eyes were glistening with tears. It was obvious he was holding back his emotions. Then his brown eyes blinked and he walked to the edge of the bed where I sat. “I’ll be back soon Trish, don’t worry everything is going to be okay.”

He squeezed me tight and I leaned against his chest, grasping his shirt with my hands. “I’ll pray everyday for your safety, even though God has never been on our side.”

“No he hasn’t. Satin loves us more. We displeased God on that wonderful day that I performed a masterpiece. When you and I-” He stopped. “Well, you know.” He let go of me and grabbed his bags. He let them go and lifted me up kissing my lips. From this I could tell how much he loved me. “I love you, never forget that.” His eyes were intense.

“I love you, too.” I tried to smile, and then thought of something. I remembered the moon pendant. The one he gave to me on our first Valentine’s Day seven years ago. I went to retrieve it and held out my hand. “Here. It’s yours to hold on to. Take a moment and think of me while you’re out getting revenge on those who accused us of our crime.”

He took a hold of it and grinned. “Why it was only for the best my sweet. We had to kill every person in the city. That night… It just felt so good seeing the death of all of them! It was a work of art! Yet nobody else saw it that way, and they want to condemn us to the gates of the Underworld! Well… me actually. They thought I was the mastermind,

and you were forced to be at my side. According to them I should die, and never see your lovely face again. But I’m setting out to stop this sentence. I will not die. All I have to do is use my persuasive ‘power’ and make the main family who accused us to think that they themselves did it! Just like the other twenty crimes we’ve committed. It works all the time. I still don’t understand why we get emotional over these things still, Trish. Everything will be okay.”

I nodded. After all he was right. But something felt so wrong this time around. “I know… But anything can happen, Sawyer. Then you’d be gone and I’d be lost. Oh, why am I so attached to you?” I shook my head then looked intently into his eyes. “Okay then. Go after those who accused us and torture them, for revenge purposes. Then make them think that they did it. I wish I could come, but like you said, I shouldn’t get more involved for I’ll be sentenced to death too.”

“Exactly, and someone has to be left to show the Art of Death,” Sawyer said. He turned around and walked out the bedroom door. I heard the front door open and close and I was alone. All I could do was sit and wait to see what happens to Sawyer.
