Chapter One: What They Don’t Know

Raging Red eyes shot open and a little girl lay heaving on a black comforter. The little girl, named Jess, sat up. Her heavy heart beat fast as she darted her eyes around her room. She expected her father to appear and scold her for having a nightmare.

Jess was a gothic looking girl. She had mid shoulder length hair that was as black as ravens feathers, except she kept it up in a ponytail with a single red streak framing her face. Her blood red eyes held no emotion and her skin were slightly tanned. Her ears were pointy, like those you would fine on an elf. But she was human.

Jess swung her tiny feet over the edge of her bed. She made very little noise as she crept over to turn her light on. As the light flowed into her room, she could tell that it was time to get ready for school. She slid her black night gown off and replaced it with her school uniform, a button down shirt with the sleeves rolled up, and the red skirt, with black shorts underneath.

Hey, she had to keep her tomboy side.

She found her way down the stairs and made it so that she wouldn’t make a sound. As she got to the bottom floor, she found her evil looking father sitting smugly in his favorite chair.

“Jess…” His eerie voice slithered to her ears. Though Jess held no emotion, she nearly jumped out of her skin at the sound of his voice.

“H-Hey Dad” she said, her voice quivering slightly.

“Go get me a beer and then get your brothers and you sister ready for school” he said.

“Yes, dad” Jess said and hurried into the kitchen were her brothers were sitting. Her baby brother, at five years old, Sydney, was happily eating his cereal. But it seemed as if the rest of her siblings didn’t want to eat anything.

Jess’ twin, Mere was sitting in her chair, listening to her CD player at full blast. And her other brothers, who were also twins, but were ten, Patrick and Noah, were reading books as they waited to go to school. Jess hurried towards the refrigerator, grabbed a beer and hurried back into the living room, giving it to her dad.

“Here you go, it’s the last one” she said. That wasn’t a good thing to say, because he slapped her across the face and shoved her to the ground. Jess cried out in pain and willed for her siblings not to come into the room. Her father undid his belt, and Jess knew what was coming next.

“No, please don’t hit me.” She begged.

“You’ve been a very bad little girl. I have to punish you.”

“What did I do?”

“Shut up.” Robert said.

Jess screamed as the belt hit her tender flesh and whimpered as she was flung away from her father after it was done. She quickly made a beeline for the front door, meeting her siblings there and ran towards the bus stop. Jess wiped away her tears as she saw the bus coming and stood straight up, ignoring the sting on her back. The bus doors opened and the five of them got on.

Jess, Mere, Patrick, Noah, and Sydney went and sat with their friends, not saying a word to each other about what happened.

“Hey Jess, nice skirt” her best friend, Nic said mockingly. “Are you going to buy more?”

“Shut up” she said and punched him on the arm.

“Yeah, you know that this is the only time we’d ever wear skirts, and even then we wear shorts under them” Mere added.

“Whatever” Nic said grinning.

“What took you so long to get out this time?” Tristan, their other best friend asked. Nic and Tristan were also twins, but they are fraternal.

“I had to talk with my dad about my grades” Jess said slowly. Nic and Tristan nodded and the four fell silent.

If only they knew’ Jess thought to herself.
